But... pretty much every protagonist looks like me, anyway?

Yes. I look like Generic Dark-Haired White Guy. Curse my genetics.

To be more fair, this technology sounds awesome, but only if it were optional.

Not quite (I was planning to watch it thanks to that recent thread about it but I change my mind given to how many people seen to hate it) but that recent thread on it did spark my thought on it again which lead me to make this thread in the first place (and also this Monster Hunter cameo in this anime).

/facepalm

Always remember to proof read before posting kids.

OT: Hmm, I think I'd rather go with the option to make a custom character. I play video games to forget that I'm a broke, miserable college student.
Sorry, punctuation and grammar are not my strong points.

I'm ugly, so that would be a "no".

Plus, I enjoy creating new characters, playing around and seeing what I can do with the editors. I rarely make any character look like another, so they all end up looking very differently.

Also, I rarely roleplay myself, usually I try to create a different kind of personality for every character, so that things get a little bit more exciting than every decision looking like this: "save everyone", "save everyone", "save everyone", "pet a puppy".

Do you mean Ixion Saga DT for the monster hunter cameo? just started on it last night.

SAO was enjoyable for me, if you enjoyed Hack/ you will probably enjoy SAO it holds its own pretty well and the story is pretty nice, if anything you waste 30min not enjoying the first ep and move on.

on your original topic though, it would be cool to play as myself but im not sure i would want to do it for an extended period of time, once i get back to reality i would be pretty disappointed that i just lost all my abilities and can no longer double jump

sorry for the double post

They already (kind of) have this.

Madden 2013 allows you to "scan" yourself in with a direct shot and a side shot. They then let you put yourself as a player or a coach, which is something I did. It's a "Why did we play God!?!" kind of look but it is here (seriously, it's freaking ugly as sin and only like, 46% of it is because of me).

As to a perfect replica, I'd be all for it. I attempt to make all created characters look like me anyway so this would just save me time!

With that said, if it was a "story" game, I'd hate it. For example, when I'm playing Uncharted, I am playing Nathan Drake, not Tippy2k2. It would be really annoying to have Nathan Drake look like me.
As a coach (or pokemon trainer which I think someone else mentioned) it makes a lot of sense, I mean, that's what you're doing anyway. As anything else... no not really. In fact it'd pretty much fuck up the game for me.

Depends on the game. In some games, I'll make a character that's me, but in others I want to be somebody else. You know?

I'd definitely give it a try, just to see what the game makes of my not-appealing/not-unappealing-generic-bland-geek face.

Being 5'4" with a wide bone structure ... I'm in all modern shooters. In the waist high wall they hide behind! ;) Other then that most games that have Dwarfs; I tend to spot one that looks like me.

I love character creation in games. I always make myself (or close to it). Makes my feel more heroic (or like a bastard if i'm being EVIL).

I do actually, I play Dragon's Dogma (a lot) and I made my character look like me same build and height. SO I'm roleplaying as myself. To answer that question, way ahead of you.

No it wasn't that anime with the Monter Hunter cameo. This isn't the right clip (the one I saw had a guy joining in with the two girls but those two started to attack each other behind each other back which soon lead to an whole out war between the two much to the guy dismay) but you can see it yourself-

If you're able to see it quickly, the two girls playing the game look exactly like their game characters (just the way the anime people did it) which made me wonder what it would of look like if it in real life (yes I already read some people comments that they wouldn't want to played their own exact self due to they saying they have flaws on themselves or prefered the whole benefit of the character creation).

I did watched the first four episode of Hack/Sign but I didn't bother to watched the rest of it (I wouldn't used that as an example as I know those chracters playing the game do not repersent their true self in their real world). What I saw out of it was that it was an alright anime.

um..NO! Hence why Commander Shepard was a woman.

But I have a friend who will only play a game if he can make the main character look as much like him as physically possible.

I guess the Uncanny Valley doesn't bother some people as much.

I thought the exact same thing! I would play the shit out of that game (minus the whole you-die-for-real bit).

OT: It'd be cool, so why not? I'd be a lot of fun to run around Saints Row and kick someone in the nuts to have the camera turn around and have me cackling with pure schadenfreude. Actually, it's almost enough the make me dual boot my Mac just so I can play the game.

I might. I'd probably go to an exhibition, play a demo, something along those lines. But as for playing a whole game? Nope. My characters may do what I'd like to do in some situations, but they aren't me. I like to roleplay in my games, and when I design a character it's not exactly a challenge to play myself.

What can I say, I'm a terminal actor.

I would definitely try it. I have never been able to make myself in any character creator.

It would be badass to see myself climbing on a Colossus or jumping through portals. I like original character designs though, so I wouldn't want it to be the new medium.
