Developers are increasingly putting moral choices into games these days.

It sometimes seems like 'moral choice' will become the new 'cover mechanic' style gimmick on the back of every box.

As I write I have two friends ranting about Prototype and how awesome it is and how I should get it.

Thing is, I have absolutely no interest in Prototype and I couldn't work out why until a few mintues ago.

It's because you play a total immoral asshole.

Now maybe I'm just a wuss, but every time a game makes me play an evil character I'm not immersed and not interested. I can't relate to some dick with no regard for life.

I like an antihero as much as anyone else, for example I loved God of War because Kratos is such a cartoon angry emo and his rage is bad ass and funny, and his violence fits in with the time period, culture and myths the game is set in.

But I felt so guilty after blowing up Megaton in Fallout 3 that I erased the entire save game and started over. I just don't get any kick out of being the bad guy in games that require deep immersion.

Is anyone else like this, or do you all revel in the opportunity to unleash your evil bastard upon some hapless NPCs?

I love playing as the bad guy, because most of the time, they are cooler, have better powers, and are complete badasses.

The problem with every game with a moral choice system is in the end you still save the world, you just eat puppies along the way.

Edit: Add an "only if they are evil to such a degree that you can no longer take them seriously" option. I enjoy overlord.

I indulge myself in evil upon occassion.
Its like a good vacation, its fun for awhile, but I will always be the good guy at heart.

When you wanna blow off some steam, and of course, liberate vital organs from virtual people, nothing beats swinging around in your electronic playground, picking on kids smaller than you with an arsenal of DNA powers or whatever Mercer uses.

It's good to be bad.

HA this is so true... I know a lot of people who were mad about not being able to join the Enclave.

I would like it if there were more games where you could be the villain and there was a protagonist that you had to thwart, or something.

It depends, if I can sympathize with the villains, like Niko or the Helghast, then I thoroughly enjoy playing as them

I much prefer playing as Heroic Psychopaths, or bad guys who are technically good.
I mean, sure, playing as the evilest bastard who ever lived is fun and all, but slaughtering innocents without aim kinda gets boring after a while.

I always play Good if it is a moral choice, but I usually find the antagonists better than the protagonists (Vegeta>Goku, Sethiroth>Cloud, Wesker>Chris).

A purely evil protagonist is a nice change of pace from either: "We've got to saaaaavvvveeeee the wooorrrrrllllddddd..

Or: "Will you save the orphans from the burning orphanage, or will make it explode for extra shits and giggles?"

Sometimes it's just fun to play as an evil immoral asshole.

Yeah, basically this. This sums it all up.

I'm generally pretty neutral, I think that in most games the good choices are too good, and the evil choices are generally too evil.

I vary. Sometimes good, sometimes evil. Evil is good because sometimes, it's flat-out funny (for example, KOTOR, evil ending to the Sandral-Matale feud on Dantooine), but sometimes, it makes me feel guilty (for example, dark side resolution to the missing droid problem on Dantooine).
