Poll: Playing Characters of the Opposite Sex

Just wondering if anyone else has a problem playing characters of the opposite sex in video games. My friend is always saying how he would never be caught dead playing as a female in video games if given the option to choose, because it feels weird to him. For example, he's never played a Female Shepard in ME because of this reason, so he just watches those parts on Youtube.

Even in some MMOs we play, when he finds out that a guy is playing a female toon, he gets all freaked out by it, and basically calls the guy weird while I shake my head in embarrassment.

I personally think this way of thinking is stupid, but perhaps I'm missing something.

EDIT: Poll got screwed up, sorry.

Playing a female in a game has never bothered me. And sometimes, given the choice I will actually choose playing as a female. Don't know why.

By the way, you have a poll with no options to vote for.

Not really but I usually choose not to do it. Games that allow you to chose sex are often RPGs and when im playing an RPG I make decisions based upon what I would do in that situation and I cant do so if im not playing a male character (my thought process could be different therfore Im not making my decision).

lol. How old is your friend? 12?
I actually prefer playing female characters, don't know why... When I play any RPG which lets you pick a gender I always play as a woman on the first playthrough. I just think it's more fun that way. And you get to put yourself in the position of someone completely different from you, and do some actual Roleplaying.

And BTW, this topic has been done a lot. So you might get people complaining about that. I don't mind it, I think it's an interesting topic. But just as a heads up.

I usually prefer to play a game as the opposite... well as long as the character is respectable... otherwise it just feels awkward...<.<

I personally prefer female characters over male characters. It's just fun to walk on the other side I guess...

Yeah, it's no problem. If people have dealt with a thread like this before, they don't need to reply, simple. Never knew why people would raise such a fuss about same topic threads really. Unless they're just trying to troll me.

Absolutely not a problem. I play both sexes, and anyone who wants to tell me that I am "wrong" when I play what I am not, then I tell them to go away. Though... in that situation I tend to be a bit more profane in my response than simply "go away" :3

If given the choice, I usually choose female. I have the tendency to feel more sympathetic to a woman, thus enjoy the story more. It may be sexism, or something, but I feel more for the character if it's a girl.

In MMOs I tend to play female characters because they look prettier. :D Though in RPGs or any other game that gives you a choice, I'll go male.

A notable exception being Fable II, wherein I picked a female hero but post Citadel, there was no way of telling she was female anymore. She looked like a very, very ugly man. :(

I don't mind as long as the character is intriguing, but when I play a game I'm trying to immerse myself into the role of the character and something as basic and simple as them being the same sex helps that process, for me at least in certain games.Like I said though as long as the Character is interesting and blah blah blah than it shouldn't matter at all.

I chose to play as a female through Mass Effect 1 and 2 due to the far superior voice actress. Saying that its weird to play a female character in a game is like saying its weird to read a book with a female main character, or watch a movie starring one.

Your friend sounds like he has unresolved sexual issues.

I kinda feel like a transvestite if I play as a female character. And since I am not inclined to display myself to others as a woman in real life, I don't like doing it in games either. I generally use the character I choose to represent myself in the world. And since I'm not a woman, it feels uncomfortable playing as one.

I prefer to play female characters cause if im going to have to stare at someone`s arse the whole game i`d rather it be someone with 2 X chromosomes

I have no problem, but given the choice I will play a male character, but that is because I try to create characters I can relate to and use as an avatar for myself.
