It's obviously because lefties are Satan's minions, and deserve to suffer if they refuse to use their proper hand.
You sound like my first teacher.
What do you mean "Sound like"?

The only thing I've ever used the stylus (or my finger) for is scrolling the pokedex.
Its not a big deal.
Use the buttons dude.

As a Leftie, I sympathize, it is very annoying when some games that utilize the stylus don't have an option for lefty-mode. Some people may not use the stylus and just use the buttons, but that doesn't excuse the simple addition of a lefty-mode for people who need it. Principle of the matter I suppose.

Wow.
That's pretty harsh.
And it hurts all the more because I am a leftie.
WE SHALL RULE THE WORLD!

Anyway, I found that with Diamond/Pearl when I was in-battle I could use my stylus, then when walking around the overworld I could just hold my stylus in my hand - not really bother with it.

Well, I'm left-handed, and while it would be nice to have the option, I don't really see it as necessary. In videogames, you sort of learn to adapt to the basic controller setting, which just so happens to use your left hand for movement and your right for everything else. Although, I suppose we lefties do have an even bigger disadvantage when using the DS, as it wants you to learn to use a stylus in your right hand, which goes against writing habits. Still, I'm sure it's not so bad that you can't do without, and if you are absolutely unable, simply play two-handed.

You would need a left handed DS for that one... it's not the game's fault, it's the console's...

Either way, you'll get used to it. Trust me.

YES. LEFTIES UNITE!

And welcome to The Escapist :D

OT: I don't have a DS, but when I play my friend's copy, I don't even bother with the stylus. It's just unnecessary and I prefer the buttons. Still, a leftie mode would be VERY appreciated for when I can actually be arsed into using the stylus. They did it in Zelda, now why not Pokemon?

I'm left handed, but I don't mind using the stylus with the right hand for the PC/Item bag. That's all I use it for, anyways.

I go all classic and stuff for everything else, but the PC is dreadfully slow the classic way. The item bag is also terrible if you play like the old ones...

Still an amazing game- fun fact: the red Gyarados will respawn after you fight it if you don't go and help Lance immediately (I don't know how long it takes, but I've caught 2 now)

My childhood ended the day I realized that didn't work.

I still do it though...
It does work. Well, sort of. It can push the RNG to a state where you will catch the pokemon.

I remember thinking that sort of trick worked on how much damage was dealt in battles as well...
The RNG works on everything. So holding the A button while selecting an attack could result in higher damage.

To both of the people I quoted: The problem is that it's impossible to reliably do anything reliably without an emulator(savestates/slowdown) and something to see the state of the RNG. But there's no real reason not to hold a specific button when performing any action in a pokemon game.(on average, there should be more positive effects because you're keeping the RNG out of a 'default' pattern)

By RNG do you mean Random Number Generator? How does holding down specific number affect the outcome of the game? I mean this earnestly I'm not calling you out I am actually curious.

My strategy was always to mash A and B consecutively. A,B,A,B sorta dealy till the Pokemon was caught or escaped.

On a side not my Computer seems to have a correction for Pokemon to make it a Proper noun. Awesome.

Rotate device 180 degrees clockwise.

I would say I'm surprised, but something about it being Nintendo somehow quells that...

The hemispheres of the brain control the opposite side of the body. The left hemisphere is for logical stuff, and the right is for creative stuff. Your handedness is related to hemisphere dominance. Hence lefties are more creative, and righties are more logical. We are clearly superior.

What makes me angry is that they didn't include a way to move with the stylus. I mean, when I want to be lazy and tap the screen, I don't want to have my other hand doing work too.

Gah... It would have been so perfect if they had just let me be slightly lazier...

I got SoulSilver today for the UK release, and about 10 minutes in, you can tell that you could go through the entire game without have to press any buttons at any point, using only the D-pad and touch screen.

However, as I'm left-handed, I find it very awkward and uncomfortable to hold the stylus in my right hand, and can't really use it effectively with my left. I really don't think it would've been that hard to include a mode where the buttons (ABXY) worked as the D-pad. I'm wondering whether anyone else thinks the developers have missed something here.
Maybe it is YOU who requires a righty mode :O
Or just play with both hands. That's how to play PoKèMoN oooold skool ;)

As for the button combos for catching Pokemon, I mash left and right on the D-pad. Oh, did you know that pressing the right buttons during the right frames will make it easier to catch? They've actually confirmed this, sorta like Masuda's Method (breeding pokemon from two games that are in different languages (example: Japanese and German, American and Spanish, etc. All that matters is that one of them is from a version of the game from a country other than your own) will result in having 4 times the chance of getting a Shiny Pokemon).

You've summed up my view perfectly. It just feels a bit like lazy coding.

Enjoy them like the originals, with buttons and D Pad and thinking that holding down 'B' made catching Pokemon easier.
I held 'A' when the ball was thrown, then 'down' and 'B' when it hit the floor and started rocking.
I always tried to press left and right in the opposite dircction to that which it was rocking in.

"Damn you Kyogre! Quit struggling or I'll smack you again!"

You don't have to...Just play two handed, I guess.
I guess I just hate feeling like I'm missing out, and you can cut so many corners with the stylus. It just grates on me.
I don't see what your problem is. I'm completely left handed and have no trouble at all...
