i've seen far worse ideas for MMOs. like yet another medieval fantasy elves-orcs-dwarves-dragons setting, with nuking mages, rangers with pets, a healer, a tank, ranged and melee DDs, kill x and collect y of z and bring them back to questperson, raid this dungeon with evil monster/crazy evil archmage inside, yaddayaddayadda

of course we've seen this before in the pokemon games (doh), but placing it in a MMO might be wonderfully fitting; also one could fight over players instead of grinding in the grass/water/cave/office building all day

me likey ^^

@Rednog
I don't think that they would go to using micro transactions if they went with a pay to play business model for the game. Also, a pay to play game would get them all the money they would want out of the game if it was successful so their money whorishness would be subsided by that one would hope.

I think the most important thing this would accomplish is making the pokemon world closer to the tv show. What I mean is that instead of an rpg where you have bosses you can finally have a game that mimics the pokemon league where the very best compete for a championship against other players. The other thing it is going to do is extend the pokemon franchises lifespan. I honestly don't think pokemon doesn't have enough for another generation. Embraces the competitive metagame means you can give a single pokemon one new move and change anything.

It would be absolutely monstrous to balance properly.
Actually the competitive scene has been put under extreme scrutiny and trial by fire by the mathematicians and veteran players over at smogon. Full tier lists, fairness clauses and banned OP strategies. All Nintendo would have to do is observe and work with the older demographic competitive scene in mind, which of course they would never do. I think it would be best to have it be essentially a normal pokemon game but with every region. Keep the top down style, maybe throw in a few quests with some stories that are interesting, be able to team up for double battles or observe an ongoing battle between others in the overworld. But there would obviously have to be a way to turn down challenges for the sake of training. The problem with this is you would have to IV and EV train and that overly complicates the battles, maybe make the tournament play different from the normal game.
