I used to never name them, and honestly thought it was stupid, hehehe. But now, I name them occasionally, but only if it really suits them. For example, I disagree with your reasoning for naming every pokemon; I don't name my pokemon for the sake of naming them, if that makes sense to you.

So yeah, second option. The most common theme I keep is a pokemon's foreign name, specifically, the German name of the pokemon (my screen name, Stollos, is actually the German name for my favourite pokemon, Aggron).

This thread makes me want to get my pokemon on. Damn you. I wish I could have Aron in pre-park Sinnoh.

I pretty much have to give cool nicknames (in my eyes) to the ones I used in my team and as well possible team members (my main party is my first set and I tend to a second set etc). The reason isn't just to make a cool team with cool names, its more of given my pokemon a bit of a sense of individual and ownership.

I only nickname shiny Pokemon.

Started in Gold Version when I caught a Red Gyarados and named it Rad.

Sometimes. I called my Meowth Ziggy because it's the name of my cat, I called Noctowl Wol because it's how Owl spells his name in Winnie the Pooh and if I'm feeling silly, I'll call them Mr Sheep, Mr Bunny or some boring name like Bob.

All of my
Enemy Of The State said:
My Lucario is called Cairo.
That's similiar to mine then, except I name them all after cities.

Espeon - Chicago
Flareon - Yuma
Jolteon - Columbus
Vaporeon - Newark
Leafeon - Everett
Alakazam - Salem

Those are the ones I remember at the moment, but all of the ones that I use frequently are named like this.

Since I trade between games so much I never nickname them because I know that at one point I'll just regret it and transferring them back to the original owner simply to rename them would annoy me.

Edit: Though in the Digimon World DS games I give a few of them nicknames since the originals don't fit; you can have 8 letters and since the last 3 are usually 'mon' anything with 5 letters before it won't be allowed, so when you've got long-winded names like 'BlackWereGarurumon' you're screwed.

I only name one Pokemon and that's my Feraligatr in Gold/Silver/Crystal/HG/SS. I name it Croc and that's only if it's a female (like the original Croc in my Crystal version).

I don't care much about them, I just leave their default names as they are and move along to keep grinding and catching more of 'em.

I prefer to nickname them, makes them more personal, currently my team is named after characters from Doraleous.
Although if im only catching them for data or im not intending to use them for anything then I wont bother to nickname them

All or nothing for me- I either nickname them all from the beginning, or I nickname none of them at all.

I have a Leaf Green file in which I've given every single pokemon caught the name of a Shakespearian character. And when I ran out of those, I started giving them names of famous historical figures.

I will usually do this, only for humorous purposes though :p

The possibilities are endless...

I have a Skarmory named STEVE because I asked a friend of mine for a nickname and STEVE was the first thing that came to mind.

For the most part, though, I don't bother. I'm terrible with making up names.

i try to nickname all of my guys but im a very indecisive person (i had to go back rename my pineco like 5 times before i finally settled on "Hans") so it can take me a very long time sometimes =P
also because of this i dont usually name guys that i know i'll never use and that just sit decaying in my pc box forever

...wow that's pretty depressing. i should take them for a walk every now and then

My mate played a trick on his brother on Pokemon Red. His brother couldn't find a wild Metapod so my mate found one and nicknamed it 'Your Penis', and because wild Metapods can only use one move...well, humour occured...

YOUR PENIS used Harden!!
