Basically I am writing a research paper for my final AP American History course and my topic is Richard Nixon. I would Like to start this essay talking about a poll of around 100 people. Ex. 20% think of foreign relations when they think of Nixon and 80% think of Watergate. Thank you in advance for anyone who answers!

I think of a good president, because of how he handled china and the like.
Many politicians do things like Watergate, he just had the disadvantage of being caught.

The Watergate Scandal and his Foreign Policy are only two individual aspects of his presidency. Neither of them on their own are enough to qualify him as a "good" or "bad" president.

I chose "Good" because most presidents are involved in scandals, whereas very few can maintain a halfway decent foreign policy. The positive is more readily apparent. That doesn't make him a "good president" though...

Yeah, and that's why people think of him as a bad president, but they all do stupid things, in public sometimes, but usually we forget about those things. Why? I don't know, I live in Canada.

I think of him as a bad person first, because the best presidents are usually great people too; like James K. Polk, the Roosevelts and Lincoln.

I'm taking APUSH right now too and I say Watergate makes him a bad president because the foreign policy doesn't make up for it.

If he was a good president Watergate wouldn't have needed to happen. Maybe I'm just biased.

There's no "I don't care" option. Most of what I heard of Nixon was stuff on the Watergate scandal so I can't really say.

Well just as a reference I mean, Watergate and his foreign policy were both very major if not the most major things which made him a bad or good president respectively.

I think his continuation of Vietnam and invasion of Cambodia was pretty shoddy foreign policy

...I think of him as a terrible president whose only goods decisions were incredibly obvious and dealt exclusively with the Vietnam war (also, they were coupled with several bad decisions involving Vietnam). The man's economic policies and a few of the smaller conflicts he chose to involve us in after Vietnam were shameful, to say nothing of Watergate.

Can I say bad president for the unnecessary mass murder of thousands of Cambodians, or does it have to be based off Watergate?
Well, both.

Then express your opinion with a vote =P. This is meant to be a totally biased survey so your opinion is absolutely valuable to me. And when I say foreign policy I guess I was thinking pretty limitedly to relations with China. My mistake, should have put that instead.

How about "Bad President (Foreign Policy)" or "Bad President (Spying on citizens)" or "Bad President (Myriad of other terrible shitty things he did, of which Watergate was really the tip of the iceberg?"

Well yeah if I really wanted to go into deep detail then I would have put long winded essays on each of the votes. But this is the most simplistic thing I want to do, just at the core was he good or bad. Maybe I picked a too intelligent community to ask this question lol.

I think of him as an ass, mainly because that's the chapter I'm at right now with history.

I'm sure he did some good things aswell, but none of them were noted in the Vietnam war.

He did good things and he did bad things. He was paranoid and shattered the image of politicians. Theoretically, that should have made our country wiser so that we choose our elected leaders with greater care. But then we elected Barack Obama, so clearly it didn't take the first time.
How that guy can contradict himself, blatantly lie, outright disregard promises, and as now lately over step authorities he already chastised others for, and still have support just tells me there are a lot of people out there not following anything other then news shows that act as entertainment. Or getting their news from The Daily Show exclusively. I am thinking the latter is a problem with people my age or younger.

OT: It's hard to say if Nixon was a good president or not. At least for me, its never really been a subject I was interested in. I can say that his highlights are impressive and its sad the he is mainly remembered for the watergate scandal when he made some quite sweeping and effective changes to both foreign and domestic policy.

I think of his jowls. I wasn't alive when he was around so I can't be a good judge. I also slept through American history.

I dunnoh. Your poll will say something about what side of the political spectrum most escapists are on (or if they care at all).

The thing about Nixon is he was involved in so much shady bullshit and displayed such a willful hatred for the people he was supposed to be working for. His antics make Rod Blagoyovic look like a saint. So most people will say he was bad.

Well, Nixon supported Pakistan trying to impose a dictatorship on our pro-democratic country back in '71 (Did I miss something? Wasn't America supposed to be the last bastion of peace and freedom or some shit?). Nixon continued supplying them with arms as the Pakistani military went on to <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Bangladesh_atrocities>rape and kill 3 million people. When Archer Kent Blood <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_telegram#The_Blood_telegram>reported the news of this genocide, Nixon and Kissinger simply... put him in the doghouse.

And of course, considering the continuation of the Vietnamese War as well as the bombing of Cambodia, a country that has yet to fully recover from that hell... I would say Nixon was a ******** already without the Watergate scandal.
