I would have to say knuckles. He is the ultimate bad dude on the good side. Growing up I was pretty sure he was the coolest character in any game ever then sonic adventure battle 2 came out and confirmed it outside of things that are meant to be somewhat real.

Tails is definitely my favorite. Back when I actually played the game, my friend always took Sonic because he was a better player, and tails couldn't die. Or, at least, it didn't matter if he did (can't really remember, it's been a while since I've actually played).

Shadow. He has rocket skates and the most interesting story.

Tiddles, the first animal inside the first robot you destroy in Sonic 1. He survived abduction and experimentation at the hands of robotnik, and managed to resist his influence enough to not immediately kill you as you spawn. After sonic freed him he devoted his remaning time on humanitarian efforts vowing that it "Will never happen to another woodland creature as long as i live". Unfortunately after he ran offscreen he ran infront of a car and got immediately turned into windscreen paste.

Robotnik seems like a more interesting character, I wish that they would go into more of a back story.
