I love Minecraft, and recently started it up after the day old 1.6 Beta update only to find that, in addition to the new content, there was a game breaking bug. Any time I try to open a chest in an existing world, the game crashes. A world I have been working in extensively has been rendered unplayable because of this. I am hoping that the problems will be fixed soon, and wanted to know if others were as upset as me.

I think it's been a bit laggier in general, but that could just be me. With respect to your unopenable chest, did you have any mods installed before the update? Pretty much every mod gets broken every time there's a game update, and if you have any mod-related items in chests the game crashes when you try to open them. If this is the case, you'll just have to wait until whichever mod it was gets updated. If that's not the problem and I'm just being patronizing, I really don't know what you can do other than, again, wait for a bug fix.
So, yeah, every update's a bit of a pain anyway, to be honest, having to update all your texture packs and any mods you use. For example, I was using a pretty extensive mod which adds villages to the game, and when I updated to 1.6 all of the npcs, like, evaporated. I reckon it's worth it, though. Probably.
There's actually a quick fix you can try. Find a copy of the 1.5 .bin folder and replace your new 1.6 .bin with it. That'll revert you to beta 1.5, meaning none of the new stuff for 1.6 will be in your game, but you should be able to use stuff as you did before the update.

I had a weird glitch - whole minecraft environment freezed. I could do everything normally, but the looks of things didn't change. For example, i took the torch off - it has fallen on the ground, but it still was on the wall. I punched the wall - i destroyed it, block fell off, but visually, it was still on it's old place. All the visual things stopped working.

Did you happen to have any mod items?

I do, and that could very well be the problem, but I was using a world with no mod items, so it may be a different specific issue. I'll just hope that IndustrialCraft or the core game is updated in the near future.

I know it's too late now but as a future protection try checking out this http://notch.tumblr.com/ before you update minecraft. notch's blog lists the new bugs when he makes a release, and he updates it with game info pretty regularly. i read it this morning and saw a bunch of game breaking bugs, like the drop a tool and it breaks on first use after you pick it up, or furnaces not smelting properly. also the server i play on uses the craft bukkit server wrapper so i have to wait till it updates before i update my client or i can't connect. best plan when MC updates is to make a copy of your bin folder first then update, if the update breaks it just rename your copied folder and don't update when the client asks again.

Minecraft 1.6 has a mountain of bugs associated with it. Here's just a few of them;

Sound Effects lose sync with their respective actions.
Player can see through blocks (exposing underground caverns)
Dropping any tool with "q" or when dying then picking it again and using it causes the tool to disappear.
CPU issue fix is still failing, same loop as 1.6.3
Achievements may get bugged.
Updating of lighting due to torches and other player instigated sources seems to be even worse.
Underground or otherwise enclosed minetrack corners can cause you to clip through wall and lose health.
One Minecart may partially pass through another on a slope, when held by a non-activated booster track.
Fire does not show up on a map item.
Fire sticks around much longer on blocks it can't burn.
Cobweb now acting like a solid block, player can pass through it, but he/she will get damaged.
You are able to travel down through a "closed" Trapdoor/Hatch (Under certain circumstances)
Shift-clicking an item inside of dispenser crashes the client.
If the player saves and quits the world while standing next to a wall (or in a room with a low ceiling), the next time they load that world they will take (half a heart of) suffocation damage.
When boats are submerged, they do not float back to surface
When you are in a bed, you can control particles orientation (portal particles, torch fire, etc...) by moving the mouse.
All TNT-entities stay clientside after exploding, until reconnection. (New bug because before just random ones stayed)
Shift-clicking to transfer items to/from chests, inventory and storage minecarts can result in the came crashing
Shift-clicking an item into a chest that is already full will result in game crash.
And there are even more that haven't been found yet. I know the games is only in beta but this seems like a horrible amount of bugs even for alpha. It's like nobody even sat down and, you know, played the game.

Fortunately for me I refuse to play Minecraft offline now and as a result did not update my game yet.

I played it briefly today in a newly generated world. I sometimes found huge areas of the map with invisible blocks, allowing me to see lava pools and cave systems miles away underground. Before this only happened occasionally in multiplayer and it would usually eventually correct itself, and I don't recall it ever happening in single player before. It never stayed like this even after saving/reloading. If I looked at the area too long the game would crash with an out of memory error, even though it was only using about 800ish megs and I have 4GB of RAM.

Looks like the patch needs a patch.

Basically this. Despite the over 100+ fixes, it seems like it's created far more bugs than it supposedly fixed. Nevermind the fact that most of the "fixes" were minor, and over half of the new bugs are game-breaking. I won't be playing again until they at least fix the sound and lag issues.

I waited until the furnaces were fixed before updating.

Yeah there's bugs but I don't find them too bad. Really want the tool bug to be fixed though... other ones are easier to live with, or I've not experienced them.

My houses are big enough so that I don't get damage logging in, and it's only half a heart so it's not likely to bother me too much, but yer, that one should really be fixed lol.

I had the same problem, but for me, the issue only happens when the tool is worn and i use it again. Even if it has only been used once, it disappears immediately. Lost a diamond pickaxe, and then the problem was made worse as i tried to fight off a creeper with a sword...
That ended badly.

my one hasn't worked since 1.4, it crashes without warning every single time I load up the game. I have tried everything short or re-installing windows without success.

Sometimes it works though, sometimes.

And in those fleeting happy time I play till my fingers bleed.

I have yet to update it, actually, but when I see Notch is releasing a new version of 1.6 (i.e., 1.6.3, 1.6.4) I thought it wouldn't be that bug free.

I've had a similar problem. I fixed it by right clicking the MineCraft.exe and manually pick the NVIDIA process over the integraded process.

Somehow the integrated processor doesn't run games such as MineCraft properly and crashes.

Mine's pretty laggy, the sound is off, and my pick axes break at the first use. Everything else seems to be ok.
