Oh and you can play after you completed the main quest. Some characters won't be there due to the questline flow. But everything is still playable.
Just to be clear here, this is referring to Oblivion right?
I'm hoping this will be the case for Skyrim as well.
Aye. After you the to and he , people , and then happen, then you can just pad on. It's not like the game says "oh you completed it? Well F you then! YOU CAN'T PLAY ANYMORE!"

Well probably you can, bethesda made sure it happens in Morrowind as well. It's not like it just stops. That would be weird.
Might I introduce you to Vanilla Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas.
They did just that.
Once you finish the main story, it's game over.
You couldn't go back to finish any quests, and that really mad me scared to do the main quest.
New Vegas really couldn't let you continue after the main quest. Too many variables.
OP: I'll get around to it in Skyrim....eventually. I have the Dark Brotherhood, treasure hunting, helping/killing random people, maybe getting married,....what was I supposed to be doing again?

Well I'll have to watch the wikia and getting the guide....might be better to hold off on the main quest and maybe the guilds...
Guides are lame in my opinion, they tell waaaaaaay to much of the fun parts :3
I prefer to walk around inthe world and figure it out for myself. . . On 200% difficulty. Yes I'm that much of a machosist :V

But I rarely follow the mainquest straight from from A to Z. It's more a... opportunity thing. If I happen to come across the place I do it, otherwise I'll be distracted by other things. Like killing Rats for the Fighters Guild. (Yes I call that the first assignment for the fighers guild will involve rats (again). )
I use UESP to look at a quest I just did to check I didn't miss anything cool, or easier ways to do something, or if there's some lore which i cant be bothered to find in game, or for "the collector" quest, to find the ruins.

Also you weren't supposed to kill the rats! you were supposed to kill the mountain lions that were going after the rats! poor little rats... XD

If they carefully inject some sense of urgency, AYE.
If the main quest demonstrable doesn't matter, NAY.

It would have been great in Oblivion if towns slowly succumbed to the Daedra. Upon seeing Bruma destroyed, I might have thought "well, better fight back that invasion then."

I know :p But I hate rats. (Did save them first, got the money then went back and brutalized them :V )

I never had the problem I could not find something in the game actually... Always found what I needed :V

not one monkey hair-brained cods-wallop.
i got to something like level 40 before actually doing the main quest, at all.
i literally hadn't gotten red of the trinket they give you and it was in my pocketsies safe and sound while the realm disintegrated around me.
then i decided to do the main quest and got my butt handed to me a couple of times because the enemies level up with you so my pissy sword of + 20 damage ended up being 0.0001% of something's health and all the later mobs seem to heal..
on my second play-through i tried to wear the amulet and found out i wasn't allowed
and that was some plot mechanic 'shrug'
like i say, not a seet was given to the main quest that day.
rally i only play a game like this for the open world stuff

as for
'The Superannuated treatise whirls: Welkin-skirt'

as i shall now refer to it, for legal reasons. ( duh, obviously )
i doubt i'll do anything that does not involve messing up the guards patrols, stealing someone's hat when they're asleep or levelling up until the game engine breaks

sooo.. yah.

The main story of Oblivion had too much of an impact on the whole world once you started it - hellgates everywhere and everytime you would pass a gate the sky would shift to a nightmarish dark red.

'No thx' i thought, started a new character and left the main story for last. And it was boring anyway.

This decision was explained. The first two Fallout games ended when the main story was complete. For this reason, Bethesda decided to have Fallout 3 end when you completed the main story. Black Isle did the same thing with New Vegas, because that's how they'd always done things.

But you don't need to worry about Skyrim, at all. Unlike Fallout, it is Elder Scrolls tradition to be able to continue playing after finishing the main story.

But honestly, I usually got bored with my file shortly after finishing the main story anyway. The world felt kind of empty after that, and all anyone would say in conversation was "Everyone's talking about the Hero Of Kvatch!"

Oblivion's main quest was OK, but I didn't finish it until I was getting bored with the game; which took a really, really, long time. But the Thieves guild and the Dark Brotherhood quest lines were the best part of the game for me. After I closed the first Oblivion gate and got ol' dude to his fort I dropped the main quest and did those two quest lines instead. If Skyrim has those two in it again, I'll be hopping on those as soon as possible.
Both the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood were confirmed some time ago.

No, never finished it. Played it for like 100 hours ( probably more ), but never actually finished it.
I even had a mod that took them Oblivion gates out.

I like the appeal of being a more or less insignificant character more.

I did the main quest until the first Oblivion gate. Then I did all the guild quests, starting with the Dark Brotherhood. I came back to the main quest when I did everything else I could do.

I'll probably do the same with Skyrim but it depends on whether the main quest pulls me in. I hope that Skyrim doesn't end after the main quest and I can't go back and do side-missions. I got really pissed off when Fallout 3 pulled that one.

Yes. I could only make myself do 2-3 side quest missions at a time before needing to complete the next main quest mission.

Didn't really care that much about the main quest in Oblivion. Sure I did like the mission where you fought along side the various soldiers of all the major cities to protect Bruma from a massive invasion. Other than that though, I much preferred the various side quests the game had to offer.

I figured but I have been keeping myself in the dark on most info for Skyrim. I had hardly any exposure to The Elder Scrolls series before Oblivion and it floored me when I first started playing.
