Ha, it wasn't until the second time that I came around to playing Oblivion that I actually invested any time in the main quest. I would literally strike off in any direction and keep exploring.

I can't wait for the Skyrim.

Well Oblivion was the first game of its type that I ever played. So I got so wrapped up in the atmosphere I did the main quest at my own pace. But once I discovered the guilds and town quests I chose to explore before finishing it. I ended up finishing the main quest with half the world left to explore. I know that with Skyrim I must pace myself. I know that if I just do the main quest I wont have much motivation to go back into the game, even though there is so much to do.

Fuck November, I dont have enough time for all the video james.

I completed Oblivions main quest once. Because it was pretty boring.
We'll have to see how Skyrim holds up.

What's up with the polls on the Escapist? People seem to have a lot of trouble with them...

As for the question, I didn't mind so much. If Oblivion had no MQ, I'd still play it and love it. If I had the choice to remove it, I wouldn't. So, I guess I was mostly apathetic.

Actually, I'd get rid of all the freaking Oblivion gates though. I hated them so much.

The main quest of oblivion wasn't great but The Shivering Isles, Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon prove they can make good stories so I do care about the Skyrim main quest. I want to find out all about the Stormcloaks and Imperial Army so I help which group I think is best for the people.

I would have cared a lot more for Oblivion's main quest, if *I* were the heir to the throne and not his babysitter.
Really? I feel the exact opposite. I'm positively sick of being "The Chosen One". I can't tell you how happy it made me that you're not actually pitted against a Daedra Prince in the last part of the game, but get to skirt around his giant legs instead.

Oblivion's main quest is great up to a certain point. I really like both the start and the whole Kvatch part, and tracking down the Mythic Dawn was fun too, at least the first time around. After that though, it all sort of degrades into epic-sized fetch-quests and lots and lots of gate-closing. I absolutely hate Oblivion (the realm, not the game). It's cumbersome to navigate, there is next to nowhere to hide if you're a stealth character and there's tons of forced combat.

I have still to finish Oblivion. Not because the side missions diverted my attention, but because my attention could never be maintained long enough to see it through.
I've gotten farther than ever on my most recent attempt, however...hopefully I'll get this done and dusted!

I've clocked a bit over 300 hours on Oblivion and only ever did the main quest-line once. It's a touch too dull and repetitive for my tastes, lots of wandering through Oblivion closing gates, then following a lead on what's going on, then more gates over and over until the end. The battle outside Bruma was disappointingly small, I know there's limits to how many people can be around at once but more than a dozen people would have been nice. And as for the final showdown, don't even get me started. I can think of few things less fun than watching someone else get to be the hero while I sit around waiting for the cut-scene to end.

Usually I would just get my free horse after giving up the amulet and then ignore the main quest from then on. I love the game itself, but the main quest is a notable low-point.

Om nom nom, tasty poll.

On topic however, when it comes to sandbox games the main story tends to take a back seat to all the exploring, dungeon crawling, thievery and assassination. For the longest time I forgot that Oblivion had a main story, I still had the quest to take the amulet of kings to Jauffre while I was the head of two guilds and at least level 15.
I actually bring the amulet to Jauffre and then leave the quest line.
Free horse FTW.
I found it hard to care about any of the quests other than the main one, since there was no damn reason for me to be faffing about. I did do a lot of the side quests, but I never really cared. I never got any good loot, I rarely got much money and I didn't level up much.

Although, I completed the Brotherhood one before anything else to get an IMMORTAL HORSE.

I'm going to stay away from the main quest for 1 single reason.

Until I know I can continue to play after the main quest is done, like Oblivion, I won't touch it.
I hate to finish the game, like Fallout New Vegas, and notice I still have half a questlog.
They said that after you finish the main quest, you can still continue to play.

OT:I don't really care for the main storyline but i'll probably finish it just to get it off my to do list.

Wait, there was a main quest in Oblivion?

I'll just forget about the MQ in Skyrim until I've exhausted every single thing there is to do.

I thought the main quest could have been better, the fact that time on the main quest stood still while I farted around for days on end bothered me... things should have progressed with or without me - with my character participating tipping the balance. You should have been able to ignore the main quest if you wanted to but then a few of the cities would fall.. but if you did what the main quest wanted, you would save everyone.
There should have been signs of an army gathering, recruiters in the cities taking people by force if need be. Progress being made. Instead, everyone was waiting on me to do things... even the bad guys.

And about the bad guys... the planes of Oblivion, creatures lived there? Really? They felt like large quake maps. The place was a mess, no wonder the bad guys wanted to come thought.. their place was all busted up.

Hopefully, Skyrim fixes this by weaving the main quest into the game world a little better instead of it being a tacked on - when you've got time, if it's not too much trouble... kind of thing.

It took me a while to even pay attention to the main quest line. I spent most of my time leveling skills, or doing side quests/the guilds and what not. I did eventually complete the main campaign, however I have no idea what it was about. I just finished it to say I have done it.

I'll probably do the same thing in Skyrim. Plus, I hate it when you complete the main quest, and can't play the game afterwards. I finished the main campaign in Fallout:NV, and still had a good handful of quests I wanted to get around to, that drove me mad. IF you can still play the game after the main quest, I'll probably do it just to get it out of the way.

In oblivion I have finished the main quests but I won't do it again untill I close all oblivion gates because after the main story there don't spawn oblivion gates anymore. In Skyrim the storyline is more attractive because with the main story you get the best shouts

Well, I'm not clairvoyant or anything so I don't know how Skyrim's main quest is going to turn out. I must say though, it will have to work really hard to be more tedious then Oblivion's dull main quest, so hopefully it will be an improvement. And hopefully the reward will be better then terrible, pre-enchanted, ornamental armor.

I almost never do the main quest in elder scrolls games, if that's all you do it's way to short a game.

I've never beaten Oblivion. It's nothing against the story I just get distracted. I completely explore any dungeon within visible range and I usually travel all the roads at the start of the game. After that's done I'm usually about level 20 and with fantastic gear so going back to the main story seems silly at that point.

I'll have to see how distracting Skyrim can be before I make any judgements about whether or not I'll complete the main questline.

Main what?

Naa, I never bothered to complete Oblivion's main questline. I put off New Vegases indefinitely, and regretted completing FO:3s.
