Just curious on peoples thoughts about this. I want to believe that Star Wars cannot get any worse then it did in the prequels...but that might be a little too hopeful.

Eh, I dunno. Besides the first one, I liked the prequels, more than A New Hope, even. Though I'm not too impassioned in it, my interest in Star Wars is fleeting at best. Not sure if I'll even watch the sequel trilogy, but I'm sure it won't be that bad.

I'm going to go into it (that is to say, when someone buys it on DVD in 2016 and I sit down to watch it) considering it to be bad. It'll either be bad and I'll be correct or, it's going to be good and I'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm hoping for the later.

Like the original Superman movies, it's going to be awesome, except for the bits between the opening theme and music playing over the credits.

Actually, largely because of the same person too.

I'm going to go with worse, or 'as bad as', seeing as Disney's intention (new trilogy, plus spin off movies in between) is clearly to milk the cash cow until it dies. Then milk it some more. I expect the trilogy will end up much like Abram's Star Trek - it'll tick all the right icons/cliches [delete according to preference] of the franchise but won't do anything interesting with them. Anything new.

Which really, desperately, is what Star Wars needs - something a bit different, something original. But that's not how a property of this size is going to be handled. The trilogy will be safe, bland summer blockbusters like any other.

(Or embarassing failed nostalgia trips if bringing back the original characters works as 'well' as it did in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.)

I have some slight hope that at least one of the spin-off movies will end up in the hands of someone who wants to (and is allowed to) do something interesting with it, but the new trilogy is going to be too busy cramming in familiar characters and imagery to score easy points of fanboy recognition to do anything unexpected.

Personally if I was them I'd kill off Luke, Leia and Han in the first twenty minutes, then launch into a whole new storyline. If this turns out to be "Oh the Sith are returning AGAIN" then it'll be nothing we haven't seen before. Several times. While we're at it, boot the Jedi into the background. Another Jedi-centric trilogy will be another retread.

Oh, and I'd retcon the midichlorians - a) because it was unnecessary and idiotic, and b) because that way whatever else I do the new trilogy will be more loved than the prequels.

I think it will be better. You know, whilst I'd love something amazing and visionary, I can settle with ok. The prequel trilogy would have been ok if it wasn't boring, badly scripted and badly acted. I'm happy to just see a modern Star Wars movie that isn't boring as fuck and feels somewhat competent. Basically I want a rerun of the prequels done properly- not so much the story (although it's a shame that Anakin's fall to the Dark side was done so badly, it could have been amazing) but a general romp around the SW universe with sith and jedi ganking eachother left right and centre is fine.

I guess I'd like to see non force-centric characters like bounty hunters or traders, but then I'd like to see a Jedi in his prime and not in a shit film still. The originals were good (RotJ less so) but we never see the duels that Jedi are capable of, and the prequels aren't worth sitting through to see them. I just hope that the duels are actual duels, not people jumping around on a big setpiece blowing up or something stupid. I want to see a properly choreographed duel.

I support the idea of seeing something new in the Star Wars universe. Stop going back to Tatooine, stop focusing on the same dozen characters and rehashing the same 3 or 4 races and relationships over and over again.

Let's see some new force powers instead of relegating Jedi to electric pokemon. Let's see new, interesting worlds, new mysteries to explore, new dangers to overcome.

Make the acting good, don't rely too much on CGI, and keep the plot clever and engaging.

Worse.

The prequels were mainly bad films, but at least it didn't trample all over established continuity and had a couple genuinely great bits and pieces here and there. Also Ian McDiarmid, who kinda tied the whole thing together

AND WHOM I TOUCHED YESTERDAY, NEVER GONNA WASH THAT HAND AGAIN!

The new movies will just disrespect all the very good stuff that happened since Return of the Jedi in the franchise and walk all over the Extended Universe, and for that alone the damn mouse deserves to go under and never return to business.

Yeah, I feel strongly about this.

I'm remaining optimistic. It cant be much worse than any of the prequels after all.

As for it chucking out the EU? I could not care less. All that stuff was little more than fanfiction anyway.

Better.
I'd like to think the franchise has room to grow outside of gaming.

The prequels weren't all that bad though.
If I had to rank the films it would be as follows:
Ep4 > Ep5 > > Ep 1 > Ep 6 > Ep3 > > > Ep2

I can still legitimately enjoy Ep1 and Ep3 if I sit down and watch them today.
That's more than I can say about a lot of the crap we've seen released over the years.

Since I don't out right hate the prequels, I could see the new trilogy going either way. Although I'm not as much into Star Wars as I used to be, so if the new ones suck/succeed it won't be the end of the world/best thing ever for me.

Lots of the affection I have to Star Wars is nostalgia, and yes, I do feel that episodes 4 through 6 were better than 1 through 3. I think that the Prequels made a few serious missteps. For instance "The Force" is a cool, amorphous, semi-magical concept. Midichlorians are BS pseudo-scifi that in an instant stripped the Jedi and the Sith of 90% of their mistique. Now they're not these Chosen Ones battling eternally to inadvertantly keep a balance between the pure concepts of Good and Evil. Now they're two support groups for the Galaxy's most awesome STD that don't get along well. That said, if we can get past the Prequels' missteps, the basic STORY behind them isn't that bad. I think that the Prequels get a lot of heat that they don't deserve just because they didn't live up to the original trilogy, and the worst thing you can do to someone is not live up to their expectations.

ALSO, Episodes 4 through 6 weren't that great. They were rife with cliche', they were the kind of fantasy that 6 year olds could come up with, and they were very simple and straight forward. "I am your Father" and the good guys losing out in Empire Strikes Back were the series' high points, and everything else just kinda moved forward in standard action movie format. Basically, it was "Space Knights with Laser Swords, Pew pew pew!" That's not a BAD thing, but it's not this Holy Cannon of Science Fantasy that we, including me, like to think of it as.

Now, Disney has acquired the rights to make Star Wars. This SOUNDS bad, and on a wavelength that considers movie monopolies and megacorporations and all the geopolitical ramifications of all that, yes, that's a bad thing. But when Disney makes things, 9 times out of 10 they range from good to very good, with scattered Greats or Averages out there. I've never seen anything Disney made that I'd actually say was "BAD." No, I have not seen The Lone Ranger, but all the complaints I hear about that are more about Johnny Depp as Tonto (Get over it already. If we're all Equal, why can't a white man ACT a role without being called a hate crime?) than about the movie itself.

So in summation, I believe that the quality of these new Star Wars movies will range somewhere from the high point of the Prequel Trilogy (Battle choreography and that third one, I forget its name, Sith Go Wild, or whatever) to slightly below Empire Strikes Back. And I admit that if they pull some sweet story twists or unexpected reveals they might even exceed the QUALITY of the original trilogy. But I doubt that it will trump the memories of when we all saw the originals in our younger days.

Note worth mentioning: NOTHING in Star Wars will EVER trump the Darth Revan moment. "I am your father" can go sit in a corner after that, yeah?

Actually, I'm okay with it retconning/doing away with the EU. Sure you're going to lose some good stories (Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, the X-Wing series), but you're going to lose a lot of crap as well (Dark Empire, Jedi Academy trilogy, Darksaber, that Yuzzhan Vong bullshit). People seem to forget that the Expanded Universe was sullying the Star Wars name long before the prequels came along. It doesn't help that just about every piece of Star Wars related media was automatically considered official canon, regardless of quality (or lack thereof).
Moreover, you could always consider the existing EU to be an "alternate timeline."

Truth be told, I'm just excited that there's going to be more Star Wars films. It elicits that same giddy feeling that I got when watching the original trilogy for the first time as a kid, or when the prequels were first announced (for the record, I liked Episode I). Yes the new movies might suck, but for now I'm just riding the wave. They say the anticipation of something is better than actually getting it, after all.

My expectations for Episode 7 are the same as they were for Man of Steel, I have none. I was never really too sure what to expect out of Man of Steel, but for the most part I did not expect it to blow me away. Because of that I walked out pleasantly surprised, but ranting about how much of an idiot Pa Kent was.

So with Episode 7 I'm taking the same stance. I was a kid when Episode 1 came out, so I grew up actually liking the prequel trilogy for the most part; though I still very much like the original trilogy. My gut tells me it's going to be awful, but the more optimistic side of me says it will be good with a fresh mind behind the wheel. Either way, I probably won't be able to form an opinion about it until after the credits start rolling.

I don't really understand the question- how can something we know absolutely nothing about, be in any way comparable to the prequel trilogy? The prequel trilogy was awesome, inferior only to the original trilogy and I hope the new movies are better than all the 6 made so far! I mean, that's all we can do actually at this point- hope!

Episode VII will probably have a really weak story and be filled with lens glares (Abrams), but there is no possible way it can be any worse than The Phantom Menace unless it features more Jar Jar.

I don't get all the Disney hate. I mean they make a decent number of good movies, even if it is a profit motive. They are kicking ass with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first Pirates of the Caribbean is my favorite pirate movie. I think they can do good things with the Star Wars license, but time will tell I guess.

I actually liked episode 3, and how they portrayed Anakins fall to the dark side. Anyone else agree?

I think they'll be worse, I actually loved the prequels. I do however not like todays conventions every blockbusters seems to need to adhere to, so I'm only cautially optimistic.
