I'm new here, so go gentle.

I've been killing some time playing Morrowind on Steam and need a new game. I recently played the demo of Torchlight and the aesthetic style and Diablo-clone gameplay really rocks my socks. However, most reviews I hear say the story is poor, weak, or otherwise infertile. As a big single-player and story-based gamer this is a big deal for me.
So, what do you guys think of the story and is it still worth my £14.99?

Might as well make it a poll too.

The game is about clicking a and looting diablo style, and has a very light story, that basically consists of..."These dungeons have ember in them which makes you powerful but also corrupts you, follow this crazy old guy through a bunch of dungeons until you eventually have a final boss battle, and somehow cure yourself of the corruption."

Note that I am probably 3/4 the way through the game and I don't know the ending.

Diablo was low on story but still delivered enough though, is it much slimmer than that? From what I saw of the demo it was 'equip and kill stuff.' Don't mind that, but I'd rather wait for a sale in that case.

Here's the story:
"Loot is good. Do you want some loot? Hey, look, loot. Guess you had best go get it. Hey, you're on the 25th floor. How'd that happen?

Ooh, loot."

Let's just say that the story is only there as an excuse to keep you moving forward to feed the loot whore inside of you. If that's enough for you, then absolutely get it.
Plus, there are tons of mods that make the game even more interesting.

And welcome to the Escapist. I hope you enjoy your stay.

There's a story? Jesus I'm level 28 and didn't notice.
Yea, the basic story is "Go in there and kill stuff", but it's a fun time killer and casual game you can jump in and out of.

And have one of these:

Sadly, there was a sale over Christmas... I got the game for $9.95 and it's been worth it. There may be another sale sometime in the future like the 1 year point but other games will be out by then so I guess save money if it's tight, but go for it if you have some money to spend.

There really isn't a huge story though. It's like a warmer, friendlier Diablo. I mean, you can have a dog or cat companion to pick up and sell loot for you while you continue to adventure. Awesome.

Torchlight was 75% off like a week ago on Steam.

Bad timing bro. Also I haven't gotten around to playing it because these steam sales always create a gigantic backlog of games I need to play. Right now I'm trying to finish up Trine, and am on the last level. Man that game is good :)

It was worth the 14euro's I payed from preordering many times over.

But the story was "shiny items 2: shine harder" right?

The game is awesome, though, yes, light on story. I haven't finished it yet myself, but I don't really care that much for the narrative. It's not a cinematic game, the story is presented mostly through text. Still, a great timekiller.

Oh, and Diablo II was definitely not light on story. I loved the story in Diablo II, and the prerendered cutscened were fantastic, I can still quote them years since I last played.

EDIT: Also, I thought this was going to be a poll on a poll on Torchlight, like whether you should do a poll or not, or pie.

Thanks guys, I think I will get it with my next pay check. I shall choose Kitteh!
Screw the cat, get the official Runic mod that lets you pick a ferret.

Also, welcome to The Escapist, and thank you for using the phrase 'rocks my socks'. I love it.

We travelled east, over the mountains and into the vast deserts of broken lands...

...and really annoying boss monsters harder than the final one.
Love it
