His ability to kill.
For this is what these hired guns are paid untaxed dollars for so this is what they should be good at... Or brains... Why do you need heart? Fuck risking you're life for anyone else's! I'd rather live than have a shiny piece of metal pinned to my corpse.
Depends on the historical context, really.

Nowadays, you're correct. Historically, you're not correct.

Well, I chose both. If all you want from a soldier is to kill then give him a brain and you got a cold hearted robot. If you give him a heart but not a full deck of cards up there then he will become a sissy idiot. Give him both and at least he has a chance to become more than a mere soldier. I guess in the end it depends what a soldier should do, follow orders blindly or be able to think and adapt, but with consciousness so if you screw him up he might end up changing sides on you.

i'm going to say brains, i'd say both but the fact is that heart isn't really needed. a good soldier is smart and knows when to retreat and try another time or another way.

Being The Master Chief.
That means both, by the way.
Get out.
What? I could have said 'having a chainsaw gun' or 'hating ragheads and fags' but neither of those have the same ring-- plus, they're rather pedestrian. Honestly, I'm not sure there is such a thing as a 'good soldier', but I wouldn't know, seeing as mister Doomguy 2.0 is the only one I know of.
...So...If I do get out, where's my half of the stuff?

To Quote Richard Sharpe

"The ability to fight when needed, run when demanded and to fire three shots a minute in any weather".

The ability to make split-second decisions while not being intelligent to question why he's fighting in the first place.
Soldiers don't question why. You go you fight and when you get home you try to forget about it. If you start questioning why you enter a very slippery slope that is a battle between you and your humanity.

A soldier who follows orders regardless of beliefs, a soldier who is happy to be a tool, a soldier who gets the job done. Cause if you get personally involved, everything gets buggered up.

Not sure if that goes under head or heart but it's my opinion.
