I was wondering which D&D rules are the most used among people on this site because I just bought one of the Pathfinder (Updated 3.5) books because Barnes & Noble doesn't sell 3.5 anymore.

I don't play D&D any more, I moved to Ars Magica, but I liked 3rdE and AD&D 2ndE. 3.5 did tidy some things up but I disliked most of the changes they made and I wasn't going to shell out the cash for new rule books.

Uhm, I use AD&D 2nd, 3.5 and 4th edition.

My older brother is old-fashioned, so he uses the good old 2nd edition rules in his campaign, and up until recently I had a 3.5 campaign running (but I guess it's over, and I'll probably never play another 3.5 game again). Not long ago, me and my friends started playing 4th edition, which my brother has boycotted and in which I'll be starting a campaign soon.

It depends on what we want to do. (also you can buy the books online pretty cheap) If we want to kinda have "fun" and fight and tell a story we use 4th. The fighting is amazing (but takes forever) and a lot of the guess work is removed from 4th. It's also a bit harder to break the game.

3 and 3.5 have more customization and thus better story telling tools. All those skills make for charachters who can bluff, and can swim, craft etc etc. On the downside its an easy system to break. I used to run a bard who was functionally unkillable by anything that could speak common or elf because he had good charisma and so much bluff, intimidate that he could convince a dragon he was poisonous.

Anyway we generally use 4th but anything from 2nd on forward gets some play and we never really argued the difference between 3 and 3.5 aside from in conflict 3.5 wins.

I wish I could play D&D, but I only know 1 other person willing to give it a try. It's a shame because I actually own a bunch of the books (was given them a while ago) and it seems like it would be really fun if only I could actually play it.

Ah well, back to CRPGs.

Basic/Expert Red and Blue Box, a little 4th Edition and the rules that essentially grew out of our house rulings, balancing and play of B/E D&D. That last one still ends up playing faster and being far less bloated that any other edition.

I'm not an old school grognard/apologist either. My first experiences with D&D were 3rd/3.5 and I still prefer B/X in many ways to the newer ones. Everyone's a little different though and what fits best for your and your players is what you should run in the end.

3.5 and Star Wars Saga edition. I don't like 4th edition at all. I don't think 4th is a bad system but it just didn't feel like D&D to me.

I do miss 2nd edition though, I have many fond memories of that system all through high school.
