Being a fan of the stealth genre and playing through Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow again, I got to wondering which stealth series is the most popular on the escapist. I've played most games in all of these series with the exception of Thief. I put it on here because Yahtzee references it as one of his favorite games.

Personally Metal Gear Solid is my favorite stealth series and possibly my favorite series period. I've looked at other forums and seen Splinter Cell vs Metal Gear Solid and it always turns into a flame-war. The escapist forums are very civil by comparison, so lets see.

Also my favorite stealth game character is Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid series.

Well, do you mean which are the best games, or which games which do stealth the best?

Because as much as I love metal gear solid, the actual stealth aspect is completely outclassed by (old) splinter cell, and the creativity of hitman.

I haven't played thief, though I'm hoping to rectify that soon enough.

Assassin's creed 2 is the same boat: good gameplay, good story, fantastic setting, sup par stealth. Stealth is extremely clumsy in that game.

I think Arkham Asylum counts for more of a stealth game than AC.

Hitman, easy.

I love the Assassin's games but I don't know that I'd call them stealth as there's so much more going on. Also, while the early Splinter Cell games were good I haven't been into the series since Chaos Theory. I've never had the good fortune to play any of the Thief games though so I can't rule on that one either way. And MGS.. well, I liked the first Solid but at this point I personally find the series more a joke than anything else.

No, I wasn't asking which stealth game was "the best" because the stealth mechanics ,as you point out, are all different. I was asking which one was liked by more people.

Oh, well in that case, metal gear.

It's clumsy in so many ways, but my I love it so. I always have a soft spot for ol' metal gear. (especially 3.)

Hitman, by far. Blood Money is one of my favorite games of all time. I found it much more fun and rewarding than all of those other stealth series. It was the only stealth game were I felt that I had real options how to approach the situations, and there was a ton of variety in the missions. Best of all, I actually felt stealthy while playing it, outwitting guards and taking down the targets. That was a feeling I did not get from any of the others (except Assassins Creed, but that was far too repetitive for its own good).

Hitman. As that is the only series along with Assassins' Creed I have played.

Although the most intensive stealth moments for me have definitely happened in CS:S.

Tenchu, of course.
Good answer.

OT: Hitman takes it from thief by a slim, SLIM margin. Also, the latest splinter cell was fun as hell. Nothing is quite like hitman: contracts for me though. There are literally 6 or 7 unique ways to do The Seafood Massacre GOD I LOVE THAT GAME!!

The Thief games.

Time was i'd reply with Splinter Cell, but the only decent SC games in my eyes are the very first and the second, i think it was called Pandora Tomorrow. From then on it went a bit mad with the guns and Tom Cruise action. Chaos Theory was alright, but i still felt like i could just troll through the level killing off all the guards with my rifle / shotgun. As far as i can remember, about the only thing you could do in SC for self defence was elbow guys in the back of the head, and that's if they didn't see you. You had a silenced pistol, two clips, and that's your lot. The machine gun rifle didn't even come into the game until you were about halfway, or just over halfway, and ammo was scarce. Bring that back, please. Sure, you could kill off the guards and zombies and what have you in Thief, but it wasn't easy. Defending yourself was no sure way to survive an encounter should you be spotted, and indeed, in Thief 3 all you had was a dagger and not even a sword. Sure you could blackjack the guards, but you still had to be careful about where you stashed the bodies and mind you don't bump into anyone you left alive or conscious while scrounging for loot.

I'd have to go for Tencho also, I haven't played Thief or Hitman but none of the others really cured my stealth itch.

In terms of stealth, Hitman is my favorite by far. The rest are great games, possibly even better games overall, but Hitman's stealth is just beautiful.

Man that's like asking me which one of my kids is my favorite. It boils down to either Thief or Splinter Cell. The Hitman series is too bug-riddled and Solid Snake isn't half as lithe and athletic as Sam Fisher.

I'm going to have to go with Splinter Cell, but only because Chaos Theory was the very pinacle of the stealth game genre.

I would have voted for Batman if it were there, but Hitman works.

Hitman takes an interesting spin on stealth that's mostly decision-making, and very little frantic running for shadows in the hope no one sees you. I think the whole disguising elements made plenty of sense, and you're often tricking up your enemies.

Thief. Easily.

The Assassin's Creed games are pretty good, but they aren't stealth games.
