I must honestly say I was surprised that the first 20 responses weren't "only retards do it the other way." Maybe the entire forum isn't like Abdeus. Well done, escapist community.

I do inverted, but I don't think it makes me a better/smarter/more manly person. It just gets annoying when someone who does it the other way hands me a controller, as I'm sure I annoy them when I hand it back. I am surprised that the early returns are this slanted (72%) towards non inverted, but hey, we're all different. I think it was around 50/50 in my freshman corridor in college, but I didn't exactly make a scientific study of it so it could have been around this ratio then and I wouldn't have known it.

For me, the first games I really got into were flying games. Forever after, I was inverted. It just made sense.

I actually alternate between inverted and non-inverted on Third Person games. On shooters though, both Third and First Person, I never use inverted.

Always been non-inverted since nes, never going to change.
Wait, what? The few NES games that actually had the ability to look up and down in three dimensions (mostly flight sims, like Top Gun) all had an inverted Y axis, which couldn't be changed. We're taliking about the right stick/mouse, not the left stick/keyboard/dpad.
Well, I guess it started with the N64, Goldeneye must of had that option. I knew that not much has changed ascetically and theoretically for the controller of the nes to the 360. For me at least, it's just more buttons and joysticks.

Inverted, because I don't think of the directions as up and down in a 3D game, I think of them as forward and backward. After all, if I press "up" on the left stick in a console FPS I don't go up, do I? I go forward. I just absolutely cannot get used to thinking of forward as up. It doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't mind one way or the other, as long as there is the option of either. I'd say though as a preference, if I'm playing with a controller, I like inverted, if I'm playing with a mouse/keyboard I like standard.

for me it depends if im playing pc or console. pc its non-inverted but on my 360 its always inverted

the reasoning behind this is because my first 2 games i ever played were flight sims on the pc and i had a joystick for them so i thought i would make the flight sim as realistic as possible. after that i got a flight sim for my N64 and played it with y-inverted and i found i adapted better at goldeneye when i had it inverted. i only played rts/ rpg games (non-first person games) on pc so y-inversion was never an option really. i didnt really start getting into shooters and first person style games on the pc until around 3 years ago and the inversion never really felt right with a mouse

Does anyone invert the x-axis? I invert the y-axis for everything.
me and my brother use to play against each other with both inverted just for that extra challenge. its really funny because in the heat of the moment you would find yourself reverting to the control style you were use to and end up running into a wall or blowing yourself up. i highly recommend doing this at LAN parties when you get bored and just want to laugh

I'm a non-invert. But then again most of the time that stuff is an issue I'm either aiming (Resident Evil 5) or first-person looking (Oblivion). In both cases my focus is on the level of 'where are my sights', so I don't move my character's gun or eyes up, I move my central focus up, the gun or eyes or bow or whatever are just what I'm aiming at my focus, if that makes sense.

I've been playing with an inverted Y-axis ever since I can remember. Back in the days of Unreal '99 and Serious Sam.

Well, I was more curious as to why people started adding that as an option. I have done that as well. I just don't know anyone who seriously uses it.

I only use inverted for flight games. Its weird because I instantly think of flying a plane like that. EX in Banjo Nuts/Bolts, I was driving my car then switched it to a plane and pushed down on the right stick to pull up.
