Portal 2 took what the first had and only built upon it. The story hadn't changed (the difficulty sure hadn't, I don't know what that nonsense is about) and the game play was refined so delicately that it felt like adding on a new gizmo to master without actually introducing one.
Let's be honest, had the first Portal been earmarked and released as a singular title along with Portal 2 (IE: instead of two games the Portal 2 would start immediately after the last Portal sequence) this thread would more than likely be about how Valve would progress the story in a sequel.
In retrospect, I do feel that timing is important regarding this story. I do think that the physical span between the two games added to the effect of "waking up" after X amount of days. Though even saying that a silent montage showing say, the chronicles of Rattman, would have tied that same time-span within a single game.
Edit: I have not played the Portal 2 co-op challenges entirely. If someone with a Steam account would like to play through them with me I would surely welcome the company.
