Its Monty Python material...
Just read this XKCD:
You are my hero and just made my day.

Separately, the Portal script is priceless, and overdoing quotes on a novel game is harmless. We should all be thankful that Halo and Gears are unquotable- Escapist would need a separate internet to handle the repeat threads if they were.
Monty and Portal!? I am intrigued! fill me in man!

Gamers are going to be quoting it for years to come.
It's best to quote the comedy of others than to try and come up with your own and realize you are about as humorous as genocide.
ha ha! funny

Chuck Norris went out of style though after a couple years. I think since Portal is actually a good thing it might be around for longer.

But, then again. I am a nasty inhabitant of the internet. Waiting under WiFi for the next available fad to bite the head off of and consume for years to come.
Actually...Chuck Norris jokes are, sadly, still moderately common. Look around on the public forums of some other game sites and you'll still see a good share of Chuck Norris jokes pop up. They aren't nearly as overused as they used to be, but I still see a decent amount of idiots who genuinely think they are HILARIOUS.

Consider:

Zero Wing is now 20 years old, and we're still talking about that.

Portal is a subject of the [a href=http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time]Valve time[/a]/space continuum.

Conclusion: The cake will still be delicious and moist long after we're all dead.

I haven't decided which is more annoying yet.
"LOL THE CAEK IS A LIE!"
or
"LOL NO IT ISNT U C IT AT THE END".

The game was so brilliantly scripted it doesn't really matter. It just goes to show how many people missed all the subtle, dark humour in a favour for a cheap laugh. But whatever, I still have the memories of the hilarious final level.

So is Portal going to be the 21st century zero wing?
Will "the cake is a lie" replace "all your base are belong to us" and "someone set us up the bomb"?
Actually, for some reason, to this day I can't believe everyone quotes all your base wrong. I have never ever seen anyone say it right. What am I talking about?

The "correct" phrase is actually "Someone set up us the bomb." Why does this drive me crazy? I dunno. But I just feel the need to correct the incorrect wrong phrase.

By the way, I can think of one meme that HAS died, or at least I haven't seen in quite a while.

Cake jokes were never funny in the first place, well, Portal-related ones at least.

Do you have 10 dollars? Cause if you do, just download it from Xbox Live and play it on your 360.

I dunno, the brilliance of the line goes far beyond the line itself. It's obvious to most anybody that if you do what glados says, you probably won't be getting any cake - afterall, she does try to kill you just before offering you cake. What makes it great (for me at any rate) is given the fact that her plot is unraveling, and in spite of untold amounts of knowledge about human psychology and whatnot, the best she cam come up with when pressed in order to motivate you is "i'll give you cake". It's the sort of peace offering a child would offer - implying a naivety behind the muderous mischef that she consistantly expresses.

Mah boi, this cake is what all true warriors strive... for.

Because of the internet I doubt any of these quotes will die out. They will always be there.

The thing is that most people never even heard of Zero Wing until about 2001. That was when the meme started. Before that, there weren't any gamer geeks walking around saying "all ur base r belong 2 us lolz" because the average gamer never knew about it. Zero Wing was a very obscure game, even back in the day, so no one had really heard that line before the video that started the meme arose.

Actually, consider this: Most people who repeat the phrase don't even know where it comes from. They just know that it is "LOLROFLOMFG HILARIOUS!!" and are compelled to milk it long after the cow's udder has become a shriveled prune.
