Hahaha I love the XKCD plug.

Anyway "the cake is a lie" is getting kind-of old, but I never get tired of companion cube jokes. My favorite are the digg chains of the final song.

EDIT: Found a digg chain: http://www.flickr.com/photos/talkboy20/2258988122/sizes/o/

Consider:

Zero Wing is now 20 years old, and we're still talking about that.

Portal is a subject of the [a href=http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time]Valve time[/a]/space continuum.

Conclusion: The cake will still be delicious and moist long after we're all dead.
The thing is that most people never even heard of Zero Wing until about 2001. That was when the meme started. Before that, there weren't any gamer geeks walking around saying "all ur base r belong 2 us lolz" because the average gamer never knew about it. Zero Wing was a very obscure game, even back in the day, so no one had really heard that line before the video that started the meme arose.

Actually, consider this: Most people who repeat the phrase don't even know where it comes from. They just know that it is "LOLROFLOMFG HILARIOUS!!" and are compelled to milk it long after the cow's udder has become a shriveled prune.
Ahh, true, true, but even eight years is still a long time for a reference like that, and, even with no proof what-so-ever, I'm convinced someone, somewhere on the internet was keeping it alive until 2001 when it exploded on the scene. The fact that Portal references have lasted as long as they have may mean it's already too late, unless Valve screws the pooch* with Portal II, which might not be a bad thing.

[sup]* Screw the pooch. Now there's a reference that isn't used enough.[/sup]

I think the fact that the jokes are still flying all over the place just shows how well valve made the story. The story hooks people in and keeps them there forever, just like the cake will forever not be a lie. Being isolated from the world and going through tests with only the promise of cake at the end makes you want to get to the cake so much you can't believe you don't get it at the end. Either that or gamers are obsessed with mysteries and will never fucking shut the fucking fuck up.

Oh well, once you get enough money, download Portal: Still Alive from the Xbox Live Arcade. It's Portal, has all the challenge maps from the original game, and it has 14 new challenge maps.

No I don't think it will end. I suspect the line will come back in Portal 2. Plus I say it at least once everyday, sometimes I say it at birthday parties to confuse people when their looking straight at the cake.

Just read this XKCD:
People will always quote Monty Python. I still quote the Marx Brothers, no one gets it anymore, but I still do.

but am the only one getting tired of the portal jokes?
Monthy python quotes is connected to a joke and Zero Wing quotes are connected to a misspelling.

Portal quotes are just, well, quotes.

I pretty much love Portal, but this meme with the companion cube and the cake was funny for the first 3 times and after the 9000th time it because extremely unfunny.

I didn't know this was supposed to be funny. Some of the Portal script was funny, I thought the Cake thing was just a reference.
Surely, people know it's not funny because everytime they say it they get a blank reaction. That's my reaction anyway.

Are people really slapping their thighs over this stuff? They should check out some standup comedy (or a cooking channel). Their heads will explode.

The cake is not a lie... the promise of cake is a lie. GLaDOS is just a greedy ***** and doesn't want to share it.
But the cake is a lie. What you see is merely a digital representation of a cake, it is not an actual cake...

Like the bit near the beginning about ""Please note that any appearance of danger is merely a device to enhance your testing experience,"
It's true, fall in the goop and you don't die, Chell dies, but you're not Chell. Oh those clever writers at Valve.

All Chuck Norris' cake belong to us.

Someone should make some form of virtual museum of internet memes, so they will be preserved forever.
