The cake was never given. Im not saying the cake is a lie, but maybe something like... Heaven maybe. The cake was never given. We can replace Cake with heaven and create.

Heaven is a lie.

Heaven isn't seen until after your dead, and is only told about while your alive, never shown. Like the cake was in Portal. Its a metaphor Kraken, im not saying its a lie. Religion.
Yes, there was a cake. Just because Chell didn't see the cake doesn't mean it didn't exist. But that's another reason why your comparison makes no sense. Up until the end of the game the player doesn't think the cake is real because you never see it. But we all know the Bible is real. We've all seen the Bible.[/quote]

And I'm just pointing out how your metaphor doesn't work.

But in Portal, the cake wasn't a lie. You see the cake at the end of the game. So comparing the cake to the Bible suggests that the Bible is not a lie.
However, think of it this way. The cake at the end was not a lie. However, if GLaDOS had her way, "You will be baked, and then there will be cake." So, that implies that your remains become part of the cake. So, therefore, while there was cake at the end, you would not be able to enjoy it, because you'd be dead. (This could get a little into pantheism, where, if you're part of the cake, that implies that you're part of God, and God's a part of you, and so on.) So, then, the cake is not a lie in the literal sense, but it is a lie in a personal sense, in that you get no cake to eat.
Also, if GLaDOS actually made the cake the way she intended to (listen to the sphere's monologue in its entirety, or check out the computer terminals for the ingredients), would this be a cake that you would actually want to eat? So even if the cake is not a lie in the physical sense, it still is in the sense of "Cake is something you enjoy eating. This thing would not be something you enjoy eating."

But if you are religious and are shaking your head in disapproval right now, but are a really big Portal fan, (This is to the what, 6 people out in the world?)
Well, I'm not shaking my head in disapproval, but I want to know who the 5 others are. :-D

These are my thoughts:
Religious people can't prove their religion.
Atheists can't prove Atheism.
Now, let's just respect other people's opinions and go about our merry lives, without trying to convince people you are right and they are wrong. okay?
Thank You!

agnosticism is saying "We'll find out eventually" Atheism is saying there is something there to deny. Thus Atheists do believe in God. I blow your mind? If there was nothing to refute, then Atheists wouldn't exist they would just be people.

/bows
Not quite, sir.

I don't believe in unicorns,
I don't believe in miasma,
I don't believe in the Earth being flat,

I don't believe in God's existance.

There. Now, your last part - that Atheists would just be people - is correct. Atheists are just people. It's followers of religion who are saying there exists a god. Atheism only exists as a label because of theism.

Look at the roots of the word. "A-theism", meaning without religion. You are confusing it with a more militant "fuck God!" philosophy. Possibly Stoic, but I don't really know.

Does this help?
probably but I believe that eventually we will see what happens. We all die. We don't even choose when or how. What we do choose is what to do with the time we are given by fate. But if Atheism is the disbelief in a God then there must be something there to disbelieve in. I mean if there was no God, or religion at all. Wouldn't that mean Atheism is the true "religion" which is nothing and organised religion is all false. Then Atheism would be religion and be believing in something, a force of nothing.

Because literally, Atheists believe in science. And science says at the beginning there was nothing...which exploded into something. Where did that "something" come from. I ascribe to the Lovecraftian "the truth is more than we can handle" hypothesis.

"I's don'ts believes in religion!"
"You mean you don't believe in God?"
"No! I don't believe in religion at all!"
"But religion clearly exist- there's a Bible right there." (Points to Bible on table)
"Well, then...maybe... I rethinks...my life..."

+1 internet cookies to whoever knows where that came from

1) The world is founded on religion and its absurdities. No atheist can avoid religious law.
2) Religion causes hatred and murder to this day. Why should an atheist respect that?

It can be the same thing that created what is considered God now, or something that is enigmatic as what created the universe. You can't really know, but you can believe what you think happened. But the thing I like about Atheism is that if you are wrong and god doesn't exist, then you die and nothing happens. Awesome.

But if you are Atheist and wrong, then you burn in hell for all eternity simply for not thinking the right way. Why should I be pressured into thinking something as nice but then again so brutal? Fear doesn't work on some individuals, which I think is what started Atheism, since some people didn't care if they were threatened with hell, they motivated themselves to prove all the others wrong, like Christianity did to Mormonism and so on. Thats my view of it, not going to the Cake theory that I thought up.

Ah, the day has come for internet memes intertwining with religon and other beliefs, I forsaw this happening and no one beleived me. The End Is NIE (or howver the hell you spell it), PACK YOU BAGS BOYS THE WORLD IS ENDING.

O.T. I see you point but the thing is, religon threads are despized here, many people can get offended. And even though im an athiest i could see how many people would be offended by your post just letting you know.

I am supposed to shut up for thinking outside the box? Shows Jessie's maturity, and apparently yours. An atheist would say that you must be religious.

There is an inherent problem in contemplating "What created the universe?" or "What created God?" A big part of the universe is time itself. So therefore, there was no "before" before the universe. And since God, by definition, exists either partially or totally outside the universe, then, He exists outside of time. Therefore, without time, there need be no "beginning" for something. It simply is or is not (kind of like a math problem). Since we are creatures embedded in time, we look for beginnings in places where maybe they don't exist.

Sorry, but I must dissent again.

1. You identify as an agnostic. Good for you. Don't let anybody convince you that it's just atheism that can't let go of religion completely; Agnosticism is the most scientific stance on religion it's possible to take, because there's no evidence to DISprove God, certainly, and none of the current world religions are provable either. It takes a lot to say "We just don't know".
2. There does not have to be someTHING to disbelieve in. Like I said, I don't believe in unicorns. You can believe in the absence of something - example, I believe there are no dodos alive today. Or, you can believe in a concept - I believe that my soul will sit on a cloud playing a harp for the rest of bloody eternity. To disbelieve the existence of supernatural beings (EG God), you are claiming... Well, let's look at mathematical knowledge.

P(x) = Supernatural beings exist.
¬P(x) = Inverse statement of the above. They don't exist.

Atheism acknowledges God as a mere figment of imagination. That is all. But it does admit that people do imagine there is a god :)

3. Wouldn't Atheism then believe there is "nothing"?
That's not atheism you're talking about there... It's a specific branch of Atheism. Specifically, nihilism I believe. Atheism in itself is actually a philosophy.

4. Atheists believe in science.

No. The trouble is here you are making a mistake that is commonly made by theists in their arguments, which is that "science" is a belief system. It is not. It is the result of observations and evidence (of both the empirical and mathematical kind). It certainly does NOT rule out religion! All it does (or the part of science you discuss) is claim (and this is a relatively unproven theory, to my knowledge. Also don't let the word "theory" deceive you into thinking it's just an idea, theories are backed with evidence) that the Universe was created in a Big Bang at the start of time. Now, whether you can agree with evidence that you do not understand without it being "belief" is another issue, but the beautiful thing with science is that if somebody is able to disprove it, it will drop all of the misguided information and replace it with the new, IMMEDIATELY.
My argument here is poorly worded, and if it wasn't 0100 I'd make a better effort. What I'm getting at, is an atheist who agrees with scientific theory will then say that he has no idea what was going on before the big bang. Only ideas and conjecture - unless there has actually been an explanation in the time since I last looked at this. Maybe something about Higgs fields.

I know that people get offended and I dont care. They can get offended. Im thinking outside the box and if I get flamed for it, bring it on.

Sorry for the slow response, TF2 was calling :)

1)I will not get in an argument with you over this.
2)Please see my other points.

All you see is "Religious people can't prove their religion.
Atheists can't prove Atheism."
What does it say right under it? hmmm, let me see...

But you didn't answer his question. Why should we respect the Crusades, 911, or many of the other religious wars and deaths, caused by religion. Thats the question he is asking, there is no debate over it. Just a question.

He's saying you just need to respect people's beliefs. I can't say "ALL MUSLIMS ARE BAD BECAUSE OF 9/11!" (Sadly, some people do say that.) Just respect that people have their own beliefs.
