probably but I believe that eventually we will see what happens. We all die. We don't even choose when or how. What we do choose is what to do with the time we are given by fate. But if Atheism is the disbelief in a God then there must be something there to disbelieve in. I mean if there was no God, or religion at all. Wouldn't that mean Atheism is the true "religion" which is nothing and organised religion is all false. Then Atheism would be religion and be believing in something, a force of nothing.
Because literally, Atheists believe in science. And science says at the beginning there was nothing...which exploded into something. Where did that "something" come from. I ascribe to the Lovecraftian "the truth is more than we can handle" hypothesis.
Sorry, but I must dissent again.
1. You identify as an agnostic. Good for you. Don't let anybody convince you that it's just atheism that can't let go of religion completely; Agnosticism is the most scientific stance on religion it's possible to take, because there's no evidence to DISprove God, certainly, and none of the current world religions are provable either. It takes a lot to say "We just don't know".
2. There does not have to be someTHING to disbelieve in. Like I said, I don't believe in unicorns. You can believe in the absence of something - example, I believe there are no dodos alive today. Or, you can believe in a concept - I believe that my soul will sit on a cloud playing a harp for the rest of bloody eternity. To disbelieve the existence of supernatural beings (EG God), you are claiming... Well, let's look at mathematical knowledge.
P(x) = Supernatural beings exist.
¬P(x) = Inverse statement of the above. They don't exist.
Atheism acknowledges God as a mere figment of imagination. That is all. But it does admit that people do imagine there is a god
3. Wouldn't Atheism then believe there is "nothing"?
That's not atheism you're talking about there... It's a specific branch of Atheism. Specifically, nihilism I believe. Atheism in itself is actually a
philosophy.
4. Atheists believe in science.
No. The trouble is here you are making a mistake that is commonly made by theists in their arguments, which is that "science" is a belief system. It is not. It is the result of observations and evidence (of both the empirical and mathematical kind). It certainly does NOT rule out religion! All it does (or the part of science you discuss) is claim (and this is a relatively unproven theory, to my knowledge. Also don't let the word "theory" deceive you into thinking it's just an idea, theories are backed with evidence) that the Universe was created in a Big Bang at the start of time. Now, whether you can agree with evidence that you do not understand without it being "belief" is another issue, but the beautiful thing with science is that if somebody is able to disprove it, it will drop all of the misguided information and replace it with the new, IMMEDIATELY.
My argument here is poorly worded, and if it wasn't 0100 I'd make a better effort. What I'm getting at, is an atheist who agrees with scientific theory will then say that he has no idea what was going on before the big bang. Only ideas and conjecture - unless there has actually been an explanation in the time since I last looked at this. Maybe something about Higgs fields.
