I played a Blood Elf Fire Mage deep into the high end game, but quit about 8 months ago. Now that means I have no experience with the new expansion so Funk needs to correct me if I'm wrong here. Mages, while fairly easy to play, are(or at least were) at the bottom of the damage dealer heap.

When I was playing WoW, anytime I had to go on instances or raids with my guild, the damage meters would come out and I would always be low. Mages just could not keep up with Warlocks, Hunters and Rogues. It was getting to the point where I was getting nasty tells from guild officers inquiring as to why I could not keep up, and I constantly had to state I was doing everything I could to keep up. I didn't have the best gear availible, but it was pretty damn good gear. But like I said, my guild was pissy about it and couldn't seem to understand that everything I could do, the other DDs did it better. Eventually I got sick of my guild controlling my life and having to a daily 5-hour Hyjal raid before showing up to work and feeling worn out. So I decdied to retire my WoW account.

Now, like I said, I have no idea what's going on in the new expansion. Mages might be better now. I seriously doubt it, but it's possible. Also, don't let my negative guild experience sour you. I think it's not so much the game that was bad as I just had a crappy guild with douchebag officers. You might have better luck.

On the topic of Racials abilities. Blood Elf racials are utter garbage, especially for mages. Troll racials are slightly better but still not Mage cohesive. Unless somethings been changed that I'm not aware of. Racials are really minor to a mage and there is only one powerful one and Undead have it. (For horde, anyway. Draenei have excellent racials, but they're alliance.) But racials shouldn't dictate your choice. Any race makes a good mage.

Mages blow stuff up now, and boy do they do it well.

When I played WoW (this was a while ago), I tried every class and the only one that was even vaguely interesting enough for me to keep playing for more than a week was the mage. I'd recommend a mage for sure.

Realistically, the race you choose won't make that big of a difference either way. If I remember right, BE get a bonus to one of the crafting professions, so if you want to go into whatever that is, I'd go with the BE. I don't remember anything interesting about the other racials either way.

Belfs definitly have the racials for a mage, but I'm a Belf rogue. You don't get mana tap, but you still get Arcane Torrent, which instead of restoring mana, restores energy AND silences.

And you get enchanting racials

I'd go for the rogue, but don't fall into the trap of speccing subtlety for leveling, spec Combat and then switch to Subtlety when you have enough points to get shadowstep. I find either subtlety or combat best for PvP.

Assassination is fail.

If you play as human you will have the ability to see enemies in stealth easier.

Ally = fail.

Just don't be a troll....

Because I do believe THAT was my post. And the ally=fail bit was because the choices were all horde, and someone suggested ally. Which in many views isn't as fun as horde. The assassination = fail WAS being helpful. Because I'd described the other two rogue specs, so I put my opinion of assassination spec also.

You clearly don't understand World of Warcraft and wouldn't understand my references. Horde always make fun of alliance, and Assassination is the least popular rogue spec.

World of Warcraft has reached EverQuest-level over-mentioning. At the point, so many of us are so sick of hearing about it that we don't even want to see a topic about it, let alone even offer advice on it.

In any case, you haven't given us enough information here. A class in a MMORPG is often about what role you'd like to perform in a group or raid. You wanna tank? Warrior. You wanna do melee DPS with combos? Rogue. You wanna do ranged DPS nuking? Mage. Bam - you're down to 1 or 2 choices. Pick which a race like you would a flavor of ice cream and stick with it.
