Several months ago my computer died and just recently I have saved up enough to buy a new computer and as I reinstall my games (thank you Steam) I find myself facing a strange realization. I am a big fan of Bioware and the Mass Effect franchise but with now so many games and so little time I have a strange desire to spend said time with Mass Effect 1. I played Mass Effect three times through to get my ideal situation for ME2 as well as being a completionist in general and by the end of it all I was sick of it. Then came Mass Effect 2 and it felt like God had come down to Earth as a video game. Now I beat ME2 only once and hardly all of it (not too mention I didn't have all the fancy DLC that is now available) so why am I now so interested in Mass Effect again? ME2 is more polished, looks better, and has much more universe left for me to explore than Mass Effect so why why why? Perhaps the flaws in Mass Effect make it seem more lovable looking back on it but I certainly don't think I am romanticizing the past as my third play through was not that long ago. What are the rest of you doing with Mass Effect now, or in general with games after their sequels are released? Perhaps we can explain this phenomenon of how one could want to return to the perhaps overplayed little brother of the polished and streamlined Mass Effect 2.
P.S. Please for give any spelling or grammar errors I didn't think to proofread.

Mass Effect, I thought, was better in many ways (not all, but many) to the original game.

Half Life is the greatest shooter ever made, and Half Life 2 is one of the most disappointing games I've ever played.

I will probably be playing Bioshock again, despite Bioshock 2 also being a good game. The fact is, I'll play most original games multiple times, because I enjoy them lots.

I know what you mean. When I finished Paper Mario: TTYD on gamecube, i still found myself wanting to go back and play the N64 original, despite having played it through about 10 times, and TTYD having MUCH more stuff to do.

Mass Effect 1 I've played through 8 times and have only stopped because ME2 came out, which I've finished 3 times now, and plan to wait until more DLC before I go through it again.

MGS 1,3 and 4 i've played through many times and they never get old.

There aren't too many games that call for it, I could play through the Hitman games, Deus Ex, Fallout 3 and others endlessly, but games like Modern Warfare 2 lose their appeal single player wise after the first playthrough.

I've played though ME1 twice since ME2 came out, and had played ME1 6 times or so before it did, but I partially did it to get new saves for ME2, because I lost 4 of those ME1 saves when I sold my 20GB 360 for an Elite.

I do this with Halo, for more nostalgic reasons.

I played through mass effect 2, then in the same week played through mass effect 1 again and mass effect 2 yet again.

Because Mass Effect was infinately better than the watered down 13 hour pathetic excuse for a sequel Bioware tried to peddle off to us?

I want to play Mass Effect 1 again, but that's mostly because I need a renegade character to import. Makes life so much simpler.

Mass Effect 2 is better in all aspects..except for the 'world' itself. The combat is much better, the game looks better, the characters are more interesting (at least some of them), but the entire game is divided in small rooms, and loading screens to travel between them. There is a vast galaxy to explore, but damn, I miss exploring the planets itself. The Mako was buggy (pun not intended) as hell, those elevators were boring and walking out of the entrance of the Normandy every time you wanted to go to the Citadel wasn't great either. But all these little things gave me the 'Star Trek'/Star Wars feeling, the feeling that I was part of an interesting, coherent world. Mass Effect 2 gives me gameplay that is a) better and b) more policed, but it took away the world.

I know, Yahtzee said pretty much the same, but hey, it's true.

Metroid Prime 3 had pretty much the same issue, by the way. Great game, and the backtracking in the first two games wasn't practical, but at least it made the world real.

There are some games that I just keep coming back to and play through to remind me of what good games/times really are. I replayed Mass Effect 1 esspecially for Mass Effect 2 so I could import my character and get the story with the choices I had made in Mass Effect 1.

I love the Fallout franchise so I usually play through Fallout 1 and 2 at least once a year.

I played ME1 only 3 times. Once I'm done playing through ME2 with all three of those imported characters, I've plans to pick up ME1 once more (I have two more characters I would like to create and play with). That's time permitting though, I've got a lot on my plate.
Specifically regarding the Mass Effect's, I think I will be replaying the first installment even though the second is pretty and more polished. Why? Because it's *that* awesome.

Regarding games and their sequels in general... Well, I've never been much of a franchise girl, not since the days of the King's Quest's, Police Quest's and Leisure Suit Larry's (yeah, that does seem like ages ago), but let's take another example: Assassin's Creed. I played the first one only once. Never played it again even though I love the game, because the tutorial and cutscenes can't be skipped (and that annoys me). So I probably won't be playing that one again, especially now that I've played AC2 (and Ezio is yummier than Altair, hehe).

I guess my final answer would be... "Depends". :)
