The RPG progression is usually pretty fun and feels rewarding. However it depends on the genre, setting, and tone of the game. I mean you don't won't to feel more powerful at the end of a horror game than you did at the beginning. Eg. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is only so great because you always feel helpless.

I prefer the RPG type of progression. Starting out god-like annoys the crap out of me because there's no challenge. However, fighting tooth and nail to eventually become god-like fills me with a small sense of pride and has the best of both worlds in my opinion.

It depends on the what the game's intentions are really. I mean, I like games where I'm pretty frail and one hit can be fatal (Bushido Blade), but on the flipside I really enjoy playing Bayonetta and twisting dragon heads off with my bare hands/thighs. So yeah, it depends on what the game sets out to do anyway.

Is Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty realisitically powerful? If being a one man army capable of clearing out large military complexes single-handedly who needs 5 seconds of doing nothing to fully recover after a shotgun blast to the chest is realistic to you then I wanna know what you eat for breakfast every morning.

I love starting a game, seeing an enemy and running like crazy.

Then when I get near the end being able to kill the shit out of anything.

I like to start off weak. makes you feel extra appreciation for the cool sh*t you get later in the game. at the end of the line you can just poke somebody and they'll explode in a shower of giblets.

I like it when I have a feeling of helplessness, if the game works with such a character.

I generally like the RPG weak-to-god-destroying power-scale but with one exception; don't make my enemies appear weak. This is one of the reasons that I generally hate most RPGs. They force you to screw around with weak and simple enemies that are meant to look simple and weak, which is what pisses me off. Game designers should realize that making players do tasks that even the game acknowledges as basically worthless doesn't motivate them to continue on.

I like the RPG approach. You get your arse handed to you at first but at the end you could probably take on an army of the sods all at once.

It depends, I like to feel more or less only human in my shooters so I have to think about my tactics and loadout. Sometimes though, I just want to boot up the murder activity centre that is Prototype and have some ridiculous murderous fun.

I love to start out as nothing, then work my way up to the top most of the time. It gives you a very nice sense of progression if done correctly. I also like games where your enemy is just as balanced as you, so basically you have as much chance of killing them as they do killing you. (this for mostly shooters though, because you are a soldier fighting other soldiers).
