I tend to preorder stuff that I KNOW I am going to buy on release anyway, and lately it have been CEs of SC2 and WoW:Cata (never got around to the latter.. Preordered before i stopped the MMO life). If it's a product with some good quality in, yes I will preorder and get my stuff. The artbooks, the soundtracks, limited edition stuff, I like that kinda thing.

But to get to the Dragon Age 2 thingy, (funny, I was just looking at the preorder deal on steam). No in-game item in a singleplayer game will make me want it more or less. Personally I would rather play without the XP shield and scaling-with-level sword. I never redeemed my special gear in ME2 (the thing you got with an original purchase).

Bottom line: If I get cool collectibles and I am going to buy it on release anyway, then yes. In game items... Not so much.

What about you, dear escapists?

I hate pre-order. Basically with pre-order you're rewarding the publisher with cash up front without knowing if the game is any good... that just sends a bad message.

Plus with big titles you're often better off waiting a year or two for all the DLC and patches to be bundled and on special offer.

I pre-ordered Guild Wars Nightfall instead of just picking it up when it came out for the free T-shirt. I don't care about in-game stuff. 99% of the time that is a load of crap anyways.

Preorder bonuses are bullshit frankly. Why should I get less content than someone who preordered even though I paid the exact same amount of fucking money for a game
Easy, the pre orderer was a definitive sale. You weren't. I fail to see how incentive is somehow the devil punching you in the colon.

That raises a better question why should YOU get the same amount of content as me if I paid full price and you bought it when it is half-price?

Definite sale or not if I pay the same ?60 it's not unreasonable of me to expect the same amount of content is it?

Reverse it though. I've pre-ordered game X so I am a definitive purchase from which the Dev is getting the ?25-?30. Now you are the unknown, for all the devs know you will just buy a trade-in copy from which they get ?0. Can you really call it fair for someone to not pay the price of admission but still expect full privilege?

Ok I'm talking about paying full price for a brand new copy so yes it is fair for me to expect full privilege

As an example,There's a book coming out that I really want so I order a copy in my local bookstore. On launch day you walk in off the street and purchase a copy on a whim paying the exact same price as me.Would you expect your copy of the book to have less content than mine?No you wouldn't.Yet this is exactly what the games industry does.Fair? Not in my opinion

Do I care if your book has an extra chapter that doesn't change the story? That the main character has a dog, that never meaningfully impacts the plot, in your version? I only care if they are taking out plot that renders the book incomprehensible. You can't make that claim about any of this DLC.

Wouldn't you like your preorder copy to be signed? Maybe contain artwork or original author notations? A more in-depth reference guide stuff that an interested fan would like to see?

Why is there no option of "I was going to pre order it anyway, now I get free stuff."

Because that's mine.

Pretty much mine too.

Yes, I pre-ordered DA2 much earlier than I normally would have in order to get the bonus thingy, but still. (I usually wait until about a week before release to pre-order, since there's usually no point doing it sooner.)

And if someone pays the exact same price as me why shouldn't they receive this stuff as well?

Look we're never going to agree on this so let's leave it at that. You have your opinion and that's cool.Mine just happens to be different

I preordered Marvel VS Capcom 3! A great game with a comic book, art book, a nice tin, 2 DLC characters and some console decals, just for $10 more? Oh, yeah.

Preorder bonuses are a cancer on gaming. A small one, but a cancer nonetheless.
Agreed. Unless it's just something like "ten thousand extra gold" or something, where you could easily get it without pre-ordering.

I've deliberately not purchased games because they had significant pre-order bonuses.

If it is a game I'm going to get anyway, and it is cheaper to preorder or comes with something useful (free game or bonus stuff), I'll preorder it. Never preordering anything from Best Buy again, they've screwed me over for the last time...

I only really notice Pre-order bonuses if I was gonna get the game soon after release anyway. So unless they're something pointless like an extra in-game item. I'll usually pre-order it.
