The cynic in me thinks it's just an incentive to put money down for a game before everyone finds out it's terrible. I think it's better if people chill out a bit, then buy it once there is a reasonable consensus on whether it is any good.

depends on the bonus, most of the time I pre-order off amazon, which means they give me some store credit for my purchase which is nice. I also kind of like the bulletstorm/ dragon age 2 method of upgrading someone to the collectors edition at no cost if they pre-order, making it so late adapters can still get all the content. Pre-order bonuses that give an advantage during gameplay need to go die in a fire.

I never really pre-order anything or play online, so the bonuses don't really affect me one way or the other.

I guess they're a nice reward for guaranteed business. But meh.

Preorder bonuses which affect game balance in any way are more likely to cause me to never get the game than to preorder it. They are a sign of the developers thumbing their nose both at the player and the experience, and/or thinking their game sucks so much that preorders are their best chance at selling.

I generally only preorder when there is a realistic chance of a game (edition) which I want running out. Merely being dead certain that the game will be good is not a reason for me to preorder it.

It depends on what you get for it, personally. Plus if I'm going to pre-order anyway it's a nice bonus.

I'm not really a fan of pre-order bonuses. I think all it really does is make most of your future customers miss out on the full experience, same reason I think same day DLC is a stupid idea, things like this are already getting out of hand and publishers are becoming more stingy by the minute. I miss the days of buying a game and knowing it was actually the whole game. I await the inevitable "having to pay 15 dollars to see the last few levels" tactic.
