It doesn't bother me to play as a female character. If the game lets me choose between the 2 I'll usually play one then the other. I usually through twice anyway.

Non Human?

Well, given that I'll prbably be staring at them for hours on end. I generally prefer female, they're generally easier on the eye, if often slightly unrealistic.

Always picked male characters myself, but female characters give you something to look at when the game goes all 3rd person on you.

In roleplaying games I generally go female, the only reason I can think of being if Im going to spend that much time looking at a digital ass it may as well be female.

In SR 1+2 I played male because it seems to fit the game better. But I guess it depends on my mood at the time.

I did play Fable2 as female then took the sex change potion at the very end just for kicks.

I tend to play both 50-50, but I'm currently on a female-character spree.
Pretty much this. Of course, my 2nd Mass Effect playthrough was as an evil psychotic dick who was patterned after an evil fusion of J. Jonah Jameson and Ming the Merciless, but my female character was the one I played to 60 with and completed the game on hardest difficulty

Choosing to play as a male character doesn't feel weird to me. I guess I don't get immersed in my character so much that it would matter. But I'll usually pick a female.

I prob play 60-40 female. Even though im a dude. I just like the idea of a female hero over your typical alpha male rockstar.

Quickly now, i haven't got all day, i need a good original female name to use, i'm not terribly creative when naming characters (excuse the fact that no one else on the net has the same name as "zeeky_santos". i mean female names)

It depends on the game. In most fighters I chose the female characters because they are usually more agile and fast. In others it's the guy cause most of the time they get better weapons (See Resident Evil 2 and Leon getting the almighty magnum...and a shotgun, while Claire got the cattle prod (wtf?) and the grenade gun...and sherry...)

Recently I've found myself playing as female characters wherever possible, like in games such as Fallout 3, I'm also glad to see developers are finaly starting to outgrow the need to make all female characters little more than eye-candy, they're not there yet but they're making progress.

Don't call me a freak/pervert, i play as a female when possible. mind you it is rather difficult to come up with a name.
QUICKLY someone yell a female name, i might need it later.
Same, except for the name thing, as I am a decent creative writer. Names aren't hard at all to come by if you have a core concept for a character; this can be for any game with customization options. For females in WoW, I usually made gender-neutral names (to cut down on awkwardness) and was given praise for how creative/badass they were, ie: Roseblade (BE pally), Hollowgrave (UD lock), Blacklight (troll s-priest).

In fighters, I choose them for the speedy styles, mostly because I like a quick response time while chaining combos. But also because sometimes their moves are beautifully graceful, ala Pai from VF or Tira from SC.

Usually male, but female characters can be fun to play in RPGs as b****es. I played "evil" females in both Mass Effect and Jade Empire, and my misanthropic alter egos naturally ended up munching more carpet than a malfunctioning vacuum cleaner.

Ah, so you play whichever gender makes the most sense for the character you're "playing" too regardless of class/etc? :)
