I usually like to play as a nice male on the first play through so I can feel like I'm a good person, and then the second time I play as a cold-hearted ***** because I don't feel as connected the female character. That, and I like to pretend that the character is either Jack Sparrow or Ellen Ripley.

Depends, sometimes plot development, perks or voice acting for one gender are godawful... Usually it's just what I feel like at the time or what fits the story better.

I'm a male and usually go for a mix, but generally find myself more attached to female characters I create.

I'm a guy and I play as both. Usually I'll play as a girl on the first runthrough, just because I can. Then I'll play as a guy on the second runthrough. However, when it comes to MMOs then I sometimes play as a girl, more so than as a guy. Except for Myst Online, I'm currently playing that as a guy. Really it just varies for me, most of the time thoug I just prefer playing as a girl (no real reason...).
Same.

It's not that I have something against playing my own gender(male); it's just that I don't really play games to pretend to be myself. Since I'm still making the decisions, I can at least look different.

In single-player RPG's, I play as my own gender, which is female. But in MMORPGs, I like playing as a male character. Then I forge relationships with male players and laugh at their reaction when I finally reveal my gender and act like they should have known all along. I like messing with people.

I will play games where the main character is female, such as Mirror's Edge, and it doesn't bother me.

Given the choice, however, I usually prefer playing as a man.

Card carrying RPG transexual here.

I prefer to play as female characters mainly because I think female character design has so much more attention to detail to it (note I don't really play non-human RPGs, no particular reason, I just don't play that many RPGs). Compare the armour sets in Guild Wars for each of the classes for example, or even the dancing?

I think that when it comes to character design female characters aren't signed off on until every detail is just right, whereas with the male characters its just a case of "Yeah, that looks OK at a glance so it it'll do, what's next?"

With an RPG I can expect to spend a lot of hours staring at what the character is doing. A stupid looking beard? Prestige armour that takes ALOT of effort to get but will look rubbish for my character?

Sod that. Dude looks like a lady it is.

Male, always. I've tried several times to play as a female character, but I can never seem to get involved in the game if I do. Silly, really; I just find it rather hard to identity with them.

Not sure how I'd feel about a game where you have no choice whether or not to play a female (just noticed I don't seem to have any, interestingly enough).

Considering switching to a girl in ME2. But save data for ME1 was a male...soo....second run only.

I try to balance. Fallout 3, I was a girl for the huge advantage of 10% more damage against all males. And FO3 had a male dominated world.

I almost never play as a girl. There hasn't even been an achievement for it, so I haven't gotten it in that way either.

I've only played as a female RPG character once (where I had the choice) and that was when my friend dared me to play through the entirety of Fable II as a naked woman.
...
...
I did it too.

And here I was thinking we'd be talking about Rocket Propelled Grenades...

Anyway, I'm a guy and I'll most likely play as a guy. Usually because I want to see something that vaguely resembles me kicking copious ammounts of arse.

I am a male who ussauly plays female because female characters are more slender and it makes it easier to see the screen, in wow i am always female because males are way too bulky but if i'm playing a gnome i will be male.

Female (My real gender's male) because most the time your going to be starring at someone's backside it might as well be a hot chick.
