If I'm going to be staring at an ass the entire game, I'll choose a female character.
lol like no one has heard that one before...but it is still comical in its own way.

Depends on the game.

KoTOR just isn't the same with male main character... Partially because of the Samus effect, but also because I find it that all the extra conversations with Carth really help to establish her as funny character. And picking on Bastila also seems to give off a more genuine never-serious attitude rather than just romantic tension.

And maybe it's a bit sexist but the fact she is a woman in itself makes her also seem a pretty unlikely former Sith Lord and the current most badass Jedi. Hey, it's a scientific fact that feminine traits make people consider a person less threatening. Plus if you played female the first time, Revan gets that epic Samus treatment I mentioned, which also means the big plot twist is much more likely to surprise you.

One of the few main characters in choice-play RPG that actually seemed to have fleshed out personality in the end. Male, not so much, not for me anyway.

I'm a woman who always plays female characters, if I'm given the option.
I did roll up a couple of M!Sheps for Mass Effect, tho...only way I could play through as a jerk...

considering im that shallow, if the females look sexy ill play as em, like a heavily modded chick in oblivion or fallout 3. otherwise males. they just look cooler in the military heavy armour or the spikey plate mail.

I go with whatever is more visually interesting. On the Wii Ghostbusters game (not an RPG, but still relevant), I picked the female character, because I felt the male character was bland. Sadly, more often than not, female characters get stuck being sex objects and don't have the chance to shine as characters. I've got nothing against playing guys, since I play one every day in the greatest MMORPG of all [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RealLife], but I am easily distracted by shiny things (as evidenced by the fact that I spent six hours at TVTropes before I remembered that I was looking for the page I just linked to) and I go for the most visually interesting available character.

I deal with my own RPG called "real life" and in that I play a girl with a male sidekick. It works wonderfully. So when it comes to games, I'll stick to the winning formula.

In most games I'm a male playing a female.

It's simply because it's easier to customize an acceptable female than male in most games.

It took me three minutes in Dragon Age to get the girl that I was looking for.

It took me an hour to get the guy I was trying to make.

I normally play as a female in solo rpg's. It's already been said, but I'll reiterate. If I'm going to be looking at a character's pixelated ass, I prefer that ass to be female.

In mmorpgs, I tend to play a male. It really depends if I know anyone on the server I'm playing on, and it's largely to avoid any friendly "ribbing"...and to avoid awkwardness on voice chat channels. Though it should be said, when I do play female toons in mmorpgs, I don't roleplay them.

On a side note, the "sex" scenes in Dragon Age Origins, though pretty lame, were somewhat fun to watch since it was two chicks going at it. :p

I don't quite understand this. I'm not staring at my characters ass when I am playing. I'm paying attention to the environment and what the hell I'm supposed to do.
I've actually heard a lot of people say this. People have different play styles, that's all. In fact that's why I made this thread, to hear how other people play their games.

It's just an excuse people use to make themselves feel better.
If they told anyone the truth, that they actually feel more comfortable role playing as female, then they'd feel their sexuality would be brought into question.
You may not stare at your character much, but as any red-blooded rpg player, I'm always checking out how my characters weapons, armor, etc look. Agreed, people do have differing play styles.

As for the "it's just an excuse people make to make themselves feel better", that's a load of shite. It sounds like you feel negatively about those people and you should examine why that is.

Another big reason I choose to play female characters from time to time is due to most male characters seeming the same. Brutal bad-ass type, smart good-natured type, raving psychopath, etc...pretty much every male character I've played just felt too "cookie cutter-ish", so the female option is refreshing. Why game designers write their male characters the way they do would probably make a good thread.

Depends on the game really, but I can't really put my finger on what makes me decide it. I was female in the Mass Effect games and Vampire Bloodlines, but male in Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I tend to play as my own gender and alignment for reasons of immersiveness,
though if i really want a rp test I will play as an opposing gender/alignment

When I play D&D I just use dice, that's the fun way.
Ya got a two-sided die in your arsenal there?
Really?:D Really?:D Let's just say: you can use coins ;).
In my opinion when you play RPGs it should be fun to think, act and speak as a person we choose. What's the fan in playing human male in our age without even using different words? Ok computer RPGs don't give us that many options, but the real ones soul is in playing as something different then yourself.

You know, especially given the number of Rpgs in medieval settings, I'd really like to see some more rpgs, where the gender choice isn't purely, or at least mostly cosmetical, but where your gender, as it certainly did in those times, alters the playstyle, due to your character being treated differently (Though this is the sloppy slop of controversity, where no matter how the game would actually solve this matter, someone would brag about it being sexist)

I usually play as a guy. Not sure why- probably just an ingrained cultural idea that men have a more exciting time in fiction than girls. At least, that's what I'm reassuring myself with when I dream in first person as a guy. o.o

When it's not in first person lol. I never understood this "excuse" either. Yeah, I always play male. When given a choice. Party games you obviously don't have just one player. Or games that choose for you, like Sacred, with Battle Mage-male. Seraphim-female. Vampiress-female. Dark Elf-male. Gladiator-male... think I'm missing one. Anyone?
