Let me make this very clear, this thread isn't about comparing consoles and their games, not in anyway. If any of you even mention 'I prefer Xbox' this or 'games are shit' that, I am just going to report you with no warning. Well this is the warning, so beware!

Now that I have threatened all the ignorant boobs that can't help themselves, this thread is about the Wiimote used in the more popular games and if you prefer to have the option of using a classic controller. The popular games I am talking about is Mario Galaxy, No More Hero's, Metroid Prime: Corruption, etc.

Some people just don't like using the Wiimote for certain things and in some of these popular games you have no choice. For example, not everyone is going to be thrilled about waving the controller about to rotate things or hold it up to aim, it can even get tiring after some time.

So this is question is mostly for the Wii owners who have played some of these games, have you ever come across something in Mario Galaxy or whatever, were you have found the actions you perform with the Wiimote to move on or perform moves annoying instead of fun? Anything you could suggest for improvement? Does anyone else reckon the normal controller should be able to be used on Wii opening screen as well?

I have to admit that even though Metroid Prime: Corruption is a great game, I did find myself having to take a break every now and again to rest my hands. The controls are fantastic and allow you to run and shoot and all but it does require a lot of effort in some battles.

Metroid Prime Corruption was awesome with the Wiimote. I loved using the Wiimote to shoot. And the same goes for No More Heroes (so I hear). Sure your hands can hurt, but then you get off the freaking couch, and hold your upper arms near your side like you're supposed to.

I don't see how the Wii could ever wear anybody out though, you would need to be lazier than me!
It's no mystery. To some people the Wiimote is heavy or gets heavy after time and when your waving your hands about and you do a little shout you will start to feel that pain in your wrist, same type of pain when you do a lot of weight lifting.

Some games are awesome with the Wiimote. Metroid Prime 3 and Twilight Princess being good examples. Other games, like Super Smash Brothers Brawl, should never ever be played with a wiimote if you want any chance of winning.

Well I played Pikmin with new motion control, and I have to say, GCN controller was my preference. Same goes for Brawl.
The fact you couldn't aim up in the Conduit and turning, could have been solved with the older controller. That being said MP 3 did it well and the Grapple Beam felt very satisfying.

I control my Wii with a clothespin.

Seriously though you should be able to use a normal controller if it's more comfortable.

I agree the Wiimote doesn't work very well with Brawl but at least they had the option to still use the controller. It was good for the people who didn't own a gamecube before hand and didn't have any of the classic controllers at the time it was released.

I have heard The Conduit has possibly the best control customization ever, is it really true you couldn't look up or did it just require a bit too much effort to make it work?

I only use the wiimote for wii bowling, everything else is gamecube controller. Of course I don't own my own wii, but that's a whole different matter.

Motion control wouldn't evolve and grow if nobody uses it.
Hopefully it'll still be used regularly, it's just that a system that relies solely on motion control gameplay is kinda restricted. That's probably why so many of the games on Wii are gimmicky shovel-ware. People who only own Wii's probably miss the feeling of holding a normal controller for a change. With a normal controller, they can still play normal games and when someone gets an idea to use the motion sensitivity well, it's gonna shine. Hopefully, the balance between either control scheme will go no further 40/60 either way. It probably won't sit well with people if they think the motion sensitivity is being ignored altogether. (though even doing this idea might get them to start up anyway)

Some games are pretty dependent on the Wiimote(wii sports). These games should have the Wiimote. Other games just work better with the wiimote, (like metroid prime) don't really need a controller. Other then that, a controller option for games would be nice.

The Gamecube controller is superior to all of the Wii controllers (WiiMote, Classic etc) in the vast majority of games. Honestly I think developers tried so hard to cater to the motion controls that they forgot to make their games good, and that's why the Wii is in such a sad state right now. I know, it's sold a bajillion units, but the games are terrible almost across the board.

I have to disagree. Nintendo have been doing some extreme experimenting lately and that is not the reason why some games may seem not as good as before. They have actually changed most of their big titles around to try something new but it doesn't work out for everyone just like everything else.

Mario Galaxy comes with more trippy worlds that provide a new experience but it also has become more of a linear game, Metroid Prime Corruption has changed the game from where you search and discover with hardly any story to it to a game with a lot of story and hardly any search and discover, Mario Kart Wii and SSB Brawl had some big game play changes mostly to make it less of a competitive game (which sucks), and so on.

Even though you will mostly see shallow games on the shelf it does have some good games, to say they have non is your opinion and don't blame anyone who strongly disagrees.

YES!!! I mean there's some wii sports type games that rely completely on the motion gimmick where it wouldn't make sense, but things like mario galaxy should certainly provide the choice.

If the game's controls are designed around the Wiimote, then I see no reason to have the conventional controller option available. A game like Zack & Wiki, for example. A major part of that game involves the Wiimote, so including a GC controller interferes with the game's core concept. Similarly, at no point during Mario Galaxy did I sit down and wish for a different control scheme. I'm yet to play Metroid Prime 3 as I'm waiting for the Trilogy, but having played Pikmin on both Gamecube (Pikmin 1) and Wii (Pikmin 2), I can say that I vastly prefer the latter.

In the case of games like Okami or Twilight Princess, an option to use a gamepad would be appreciated. I haven't played TP on the Wii, so I can't comment on its control scheme, but the Gamecube version had very smooth controls. In the case of Okami, there's points where I wish I had the Gamecube controller (or PS2 controller, considering Okami's origins), but I'm more inclined to blame the folks who made that subpar port than the Wiimote itself.

The only time I've found myself wishing for a Gamecube controller rather than a Wiimote (Okami) has been due to shoddy implementation. The only real problem I had with that game was the fact that fighting with any weapon other than rosary beads was extremely difficult given the use of time-activated combos (basically what you get in the 3d Zelda games, but simply doing the first move over and over was not very feasible or even easy). Rosary beads only needed you to shake the Wiimote constantly, while the other weapons required you to time the shakes and didn't give you enough of a timing window to do it. Would a Gamecube controller have been preferable for combat? Yes, but even better than a Gamecube controller would be better-implemented Wiimote controls. The brush techniques were very intuitive and fun to do with the Wiimote, and made up for the shoddy combat, and the shoddy combat was not the fault of the Wiimote itself. So good Wiimote > Gamecube controller > bad Wiimote.

So, my actual answer? Just because a game is technically capable of supporting the Gamecube controller doesn't mean it should necessarily be implemented in every single case. Taking Mario Galaxy as an example, you can't collect the star bits with a Gamecube controller, nor can a second player join in. While Mario could be controlled just as easily with a Gamecube controller, the Wiimote allows for such aspects as the star bits, which I found extremely charming, while not deducting from your ability to control Mario. Adding Gamecube functionality would require that they remove star bits altogether (which I feel would detract from the game more than having to use the Wiimote over the Gamecube controller) or come up with a workaround to the "feed me star bits please" parts, which would make the star bits redundant and be even worse than simply removing them in my opinion.

My friend is as good with a Wiimote as he is with a Gamecube controller. I'm as good with the nunchuck.

EDIT: On that last point, hell yes I want my Gamecube controller to work on the Wii menu. I can (almost) understand why it's not there, but I can't see a reason not to put it there.
