I was round one of my girl mates houses once, she went off to do something, leaving her MSN on, so i started chatting to her mates, not telling them it was me, it was quite funny actually, didn't learn anything incriminating though, which was lucky =P

I am female, but I have always chosen a male character for any game I've played. A few reasons would be to avoid harassment, the male clothing looks more normal to me, (females are usually always in a dress and high heels for some reason) and I guess respect.

I am not someone who is incapable or unwilling to accomplish things with my own power. Accepting multiple handouts from people or power leveling baffles me. I imagine males can avoid the guilt through feeling they are just tricking people into doing stuff for them, but it would be a direct blow to my pride. I suppose the bigger problem is that choosing either a male or female character will result in being treated a certain way.

Always play male.
I also find it funny when people either legitimate female or pretending to be female come in and say "I'm a girl" and I reply with "Good for you" and they start getting all angry.

I know that I definatelty don't and generally frown upon those who do (only if they're pretending).

No. I have Aspergers Syndrome (clinically diagnosed, and god do I hate the idiots who make it necessary to say that) and that kind of deception doesn't come naturally to me as a result. I've heard that NTs do this, though. They tend, in my experience, to be very deceptive and untrustworthy, so this doesn't surprise me. If they weren't the kind of losers who would do shit like this, they wouldn't build societies where it works.

I have played female characters in games with exclusive equipment (I'm very partial to the binded set in Demon's Souls, what with its high fire resistance and low weight) or games like Mass Effect where it's a different way to experience the story, but I have never and would never misrepresent my IRL gender to others.
NTs?
Neuro-typicals. People who aren't on the spectrum and have brains that work normally.

May I ask why that irks you so much?
Because the self-diagnosed people have earned themselves such an awful reputation on the internet that they've made it hard for all of us and turned Aspergers Syndrome into an insult online. The fact that I have to so specifically separate myself from them reminds me of that.

Every female character I make in a game without voice chat, I do exactly that.

Works every. Damned. Time. No regrets. I mean, it is a video game, after all.

Heck, everyone I know on Guild Wars still think I'm the girl I pulled from a google image search onto their guild forums.. they'll never figure it out.
Congratulations, you're a transvestite.
It may be a game, but you are deceiving actual people.
It works, all that matters. Don't knock it if it works.

I did this, too.

Interestingly, I never did the 'Oh baby, you're so hot. If you give me all of your best items, I might go out with you...' thing that alot of guys do. I basically acted like a gigantic asshole. Apparently not only is that acceptable behavior for a woman, but it gets guys to fawn over you and drown you in fun trinkets.

There's your secret to life! Be an asshole and everything falls into place.
I always go with the "ambitious, calm yet assertive" type of female when I do it. Give them just enough "I wonder?" to make them malleable, yet also just enough "Well, you see.." to make some distance between myself and the person I'm manipulating with my act, as to keep them close and eager.

I'm such an asshole, but my gear and gold are so plentiful from it..

i'm male, and in any game i'm given a choice, i play a female. two reasons: 1, i'm attracted to females, so it makes sense that if i'm going to look at a character for X hours, it may as well be a nice looking one.

and 2, i feel that i'm more female than male anyway. i've never been all that masculine, and have had FAR more female friends than male friends (and i do mean friends, not love interests). it's just easier for me to get along with women, i dunno. if pressed i would say i'm a lesbian that was born a guy.... if that makes any sense at all.

but i've never done it to intentionally "trick" people or get things from them. i just act like a girl in games cause it comes naturally.

No I don't play as the female nor do I intend to in future MMO games. While I got nothing against to those who played as female but I rather be honest by playing as my true gender to those who see or play alongside with. Ok sure I can easily tell them I'm a dude but 'm sure deceiving them the first place (well ok most guy don't really give a danm about your real gender while playing).

As a girl the exstent of my using my femaleness to get guys to do stuff for me begins and ends at 'carry my heavy bag because i am weak'.

But on the internets I tend to be honest.

Also I don't play MMO's so I havn't encountered many of the problems so girls come up against with really douchy/horny guys.

Regarding MMO's, I know a lot of guys play female characters (which is cool), but I've also heard of (and known) some guys pretending they are female IRL in order to get help/free stuff off of unsuspecting guys.
I'm a bit skeptical of if this actually works though, as I'm a girl who plays, and while I dont make a big deal out of it, the most I've gotten is generally harrassment/unwanted flirting.
So I have a question for you, what do you guys think, and have you ever pretended to be female to get things?
If yes, did it work?
If no, would you, given the oppurtunity?
It goes both ways, I've run into guys who pretend to be girls, and girls who pretend to be guys. I've also met girls who claimed to be guys playing female characters until you really got to know them and wound up with them on voice chat. Pretty much every variation on the whole gender/crossdressing thing online has been done.

I play characters/have avatars of both genders, but I'm up front about being a dude, especially if asked. In many cases it's not an issue since people know me as a male character before I create any alts. depends on the game, the situation, and what I decide I like playing as.

To be honest, I have briefly considered messing with people's heads online by claiming I'm a hemaphrodite IRL (hey, they do exist), just to have some fun with people because of how concerned everyone gets over people's real gender. Not sure if I could pull it off, and to be honest I don't much care for long term deceptions that are going to PO people. :)

Just going by the raw numbers, you do know there have to be some she-males/futanari fodder and stuff out there playing games like WoW.

Nope, I wouldn't be able to stand feeling girly period.
Your avatar seems to contradict that. My Little Pony is considered to be quite a girly show.

OP: I wouldn't. If a game has a customisable avatar I'd rather it looked like me or something wacky. I don't mind playing girls but if I have the choice I see no reason to.

I can't get into a female persona. I'm not even a straight man; I just find it difficult to immerse myself into a female character, especially in an online MMO where making relationships and communication are more important to me than "phat loot" - if I do ever, say, meet a guildmate in real life, I'd rather my mates see I am what I advertised.

On the other hand, men are weak when it comes to impressing women; and stupid. I have had friends play female characters and even cybersex with other men to get loot and it works; sometimes quite well. If you can pull it off you can earn a goldmine of free stuff.

That's just not why I play games.

(Another interesting point - actual real females seldom seem to beg for loot; it's usually men scamming other men. Females are rare in the MMO world, at least comparatively to men. Ask any economist what rarity does to a commodity. And we're all commodities.)

I pretended to be a woman in Playstation Home to see peoples reactions. I was bombarded by friend requests and people dancing in front of me. Are they seriously that desperate?

I can only recall pretending to be female once while online, and that was when playing Diablo 2, there were a bunch of guys in general chat talking about their dick sizes and their sexual prowess and being very degrading and sexist about it. After a couple minutes of hearing a bunch of guys who had probably never even seen a breast bragging about their "abilities" I made a post calling them on it. Then one guy asked if I was a woman, and I said yes. Magically the stupid sexist posts stopped.
