I was dissapointed when the poll did not represent how little I care about this pseudo celebrity culture.
Seriously. Why does anyone care?
If you don't vote on the poll it is assumed you don't care, then you press the back button and stop concerning yourself with a thread you don't care about.

: /

TBH I'm kinda surprised at the amount of people who posted in this thread purely to show they don't care about this thread. Who knew there was so much scorn for something as fairly benign as the royal family.
I think the disdain is partly them being paid by the government to live as a tourist attraction. They are the Shamu of Britain. They live to be seen by foreigners who want a glimpse of the past.

Maybe I'm weird but that just doesn't seem like something worthy of disdain. They have a certain role (even if it's primarily for entertainment) and they perform it well, their country benefits from it, what is the source of disdain? As far as celebrities go I think the royal family carries itself better then many equally famous ones today do and their overall effect on their country is positive.

But dislike them or not, I cannot for the life of me understand why so many people are in this thread solely to voice their "indifference" towards this, I've honestly never seen so many people bother to post in a thread simply to say "I don't care". Posts voicing support or opinions I get, posts voicing disapproval also add to the discussion, but over half the posts might as well not have been posted at all.

There's also disdain for the fact that they're not news. It's just a family, same as any other family. It's disdain at the news for wasting time by caring about them instead of news.

They can call it Lord Fuckface The 1st for all I care, I really don't give a shit.

I don't know why I'm supposed to care quite frankly.
Fuck Face the First. I like it. Nice alliteration. He/she can be the first rapper prince/princess. Their stage name will be Triple F.
Yes, you win all the internets, and a community spotlight nomination for that.

Alas, yes, because besides the 'Ooh, monarchy, how romantic/quaint/whatever', they're not just the British royal family - PLENTY of other countries have Elizabeth II as their Queen and head of state, and more than that still remain part of the Commonwealth. I'm Canadian, so I can only imagine the fuss that'll kick up when this becomes an actual thing.

On the monarchy question, I'm not quite decided yet - I mean if they had any serious power, that would be a problem, except everyone's on the same page there, so they don't, and no problem manifests itself. So it becomes a question of culture, heritage, and international ties versus the ethics of said culture, heritage, and the system, not to mention having an unelected official serve for life as 'Head of State'. In all likelihood, in Canada at least, the days of the monarchy being part of the government are numbered - some day, something will manifest which makes it an actual issue, and that trouble will be enough to set public, and eventually parliamentary, opinion against it for good.

Would rather have a head of state trained their entire life .
Well... there's about... mmmmmm...... 4500-6000 years of history to show why that's probably not the best or most stable form of government.
That is where we disagree. I see that as 4500-6000 years of history showing why it is a superior form of government. Yes, there have been bad kings and queens and there have been good elected officials, but they pale in comparison compared to the awful elected rulers of many countries in the past 200 years. Just think, World War II "would never have come unless, under American and modernising pressure, we had driven the Habsburgs out of Austria and the Hohenzollerns out of Germany. By making these vacuums we gave the opening for the Hitlerite monster to crawl out of its sewer on to the vacant thrones." - Winston Churchill

I could not give less of a shit. Seriously, just WHY? What makes the royal family interesting? Oh yeah, that's right... they're richer than we are. Now it all makes sense now. All hail our overlords!

Sheesh. Bunch of Negative Nellies on the Escapist today!

I too don't really care that much, but what is up with the need you guys have to make sure everyone knows that? Nobody is contributing to a conversation or discussing anything here, it's just one big circlejerk of hate and venom.

I hope they name it something normal like Greg. That shit would be hilarious. I want to live to the age where he would become king, and all the news anchors would have to say "King Greg" with a straight face.

Random guy announces he's having a baby with his wife on the escapist: "Aww good for you, man! Congratulations! You must be so excited!"

British royalty having a baby reported by random guy: "WHO GIVES A SHIT!?"

Stay classy, internet.

Do you think anyone inside the UK gives a shit, other than a few royal arselickers?

Because I sure as hell don't, and I'm British.

To be honest I think more people outside the UK are more excited considering most tourist's can't get enough of our outdated monarchy.
^My opinion summed up perfectly.

Congratulations and all but... so what? This is no more important than Harry and Sally down the street having kids. They're just people, institutional, relic-of-the-past, tourist-attraction people.

And nobody I know in the UK cares, especially not me.

I'm in the UK and I don't give a fuck to be honest. Think the whole thing is just a way for the press to turn the news away fromt he fact the government doesn't really want to do a damn thing about them breaking the law to a horrendous degree for decades.
It's all that'll be on the news for another 6 weeks before someone calls someone else a paedophile and we have to deal with that again.

None of those names are even relevant seeing as they would only be taken upon ascending to the throne. Royals frequently change their names upon their coronation as it ties them to history and tradition, plus it gives the illusion of an unbroken family line. Or indeed to avoid unfortunate associations, for example if Charles ever became king there is no way he'd have himself crowned Charles III.

But it doesn't matter anyway, it's just going to be another over-privileged blue-blooded sprog with no connection to the rest of the country besides the fact it's sponging off the rest of us even though its family will be rich enough to not need any taxpayer's money.
