Do you even think anyone outside the UK gives a shit?
Alas, yes, because besides the 'Ooh, monarchy, how romantic/quaint/whatever', they're not just the British royal family - PLENTY of other countries have Elizabeth II as their Queen and head of state, and more than that still remain part of the Commonwealth. I'm Canadian, so I can only imagine the fuss that'll kick up when this becomes an actual thing.
On the monarchy question, I'm not quite decided yet - I mean if they had any serious power, that would be a problem, except everyone's on the same page there, so they don't, and no problem manifests itself. So it becomes a question of culture, heritage, and international ties versus the ethics of said culture, heritage, and the system, not to mention having an unelected official serve for life as 'Head of State'. In all likelihood, in Canada at least, the days of the monarchy being part of the government are numbered - some day, something will manifest which makes it an actual issue, and that trouble will be enough to set public, and eventually parliamentary, opinion against it for good.
