As I look back, I realize how much of my life i spent watching anime, probably even before i knew it was japanese, or where japan was, or even that it existed. Anyways, i sort of shunned it in middle school, but have begun dabbling in it again.

During that period, when i cut myself off from anime, i just sort of went along with what everybody else said about it, about all the angst, stupid, complex plots, etc. Also, the people at my school who were known to be obsessed with anime sort of turned me off: they spoke of nothing else and sort of got up in your face about it, which i found pretty annoying, sorry if i sound a bit intolerant there. Funny thing is, i started watching Bleach, and the stereotypes people talked about were all there. But i had fun with it just the same, and here i am now. I wanted to know, what is the biggest reason that people stay away from anime?

The Weeaboos. They piss me off.

And as personal preference, I dislike the dissonance between the money action shots and the almost static conversations.

-EDIT-
Also, be careful with these threads. They usually tend to devolve into debates between Weeaboos, detractors, and intelligent people who get caught in the crossfire.

The fanbase.

I dont mean to hate on anyone here in particular or anything, but they're just...strange people a lot of the time.

Oh yeah, and Rule 34, another reason to be wary of the fans.

We've had this topic many times. Honestly I never felt like anyone had a -truly- good reason for disliking all of it. Ive no doubt someone will quote me to try to prove me wrong, though. I get not liking some, but all is just crazy.

It's all the same. They are all rehashes and copies of each other, almost to a tee. The ones that happen to be innovative and well written usually tend to be labeled as "classics", since you know.. they're not painful to watch.

All of the above, plus the cultural divide. I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan, though, but I'm pretty sure anybody who has seen any of Miyazaki's films is as well.

My biggest issue? It's hard to find on Netflix's instant queue, which make it really hard to watch (I've been trying to get into it for a while) without using a shady site and/or pirating it.

I weaned myself off of Anime for a year, then I went back to watching my favorite anime "Inuyasha". I had no idea WTF was going on, and then I saw bleach and decided that it would be better if I remained free from its poison.

You do know that can be said about anything, right?

OT: I have the same problems with anime that I have with any other medium because it is just that.

I find it strange that you would say this. I thought you were the one who said in one of the other threads that maybe people just like it for the sake of liking it?

The inverse is also true. Some people just don't like it. They don't need a reason, they simply don't. Problems only arise when someone takes issue with someone else's opinion.

I hate it when the English Dub (or English Subtitles) changes the meaning from the original Japanese.

back in grade 5, my class used to make fun of a kid who read manga because it was echhi...there was one shower sceney thing and we made fun of him for reading smut. Anyways, now I watch anime and read the occasional graphic novel and I'd say the only problem is the echhiness. I'm trying to watch a show, not a softcore porno. Other than the fact that every character sounds like they're 10, anime has no problems.

I like the complex plots, that's definitely a plus point. Voice acting can't be traced to Anime specifically, there's shitty English dubs in most foreign films. Weeaboos are a little crazy and divorced from reality but then so are people who are really into stamps or trains.

Your forgot misogyny in your list, that's definitely incredibly widespread in Anime and in fact a lot of the things in your list (like screechy characterisation) are secondary points which can be traced back to this one.

Some anime are good (FlCl, Cowboy Bebop), some are bad (Naruto, DBZ).
Interesting. I've heard some bad things about DBZ, but Dragon Ball seems to be a classic.

Mind clearing that up?

only things i don't like about anime:
-the 8-14 year old fetish
-the retarded sexism (on both sides)
-the wapanese fanboys. the wapanese girls, atleast are pretty hawt, and cool :p (yes, Wapansese, as in Wigger for japan :p)
