My problem with anime:

Dragon Ball ended. it was a jewel encrusted orb of awesome.
See, I could never get this - OK, well, I found some of the characters to be interesting, but the main problem I had was that the way they did the episodes, it would be 90% filled with long scenes that flicked back and forth between two fighters with pulsating forehead veins who stood there heavy breathing and saying nothing more complex than 'NNGghghghgnngngngghh...!'. THIS IS BORING. And then the episode will end and the announcer eill say 'On the NEXT episode of DBZ...' and they'll show a picture of more of this NNNNghghgg stuff. You could never appreciate the interesting characters, because they never SAID anything!

Perhaps I just never got into it - I certainly don't mind other people liking it, I just can't understand them, sadly =(.

OT: The only problem I usually have with anime is that the girls are either the ball-busting hyper-masculinised type, or the doe-eyed, eager-to-please, fragile type. Can't we have more balanced, intelligent females in anime? (Yes I know there are some. I just want more, is all).
For one thing, the anime was to blame for dragging it out, it had a lot less yelling (well, not less, but it just wasn't like 30 or 40 seconds of it at a time) and faster paced in the manga. It had more blood and lanquange too.

Besides it's Dragon Ball Z.

It has robots, dinosaurs, martial arts, ninjas, demons, monsters, aliens, and every main character can blow up the god damned solar system, what else could you want? It never took it'self seriously in the first place, so you can't say it doesn't make any sense as a con.
This is true, to a certain extent - like I said, I found some of the characters (and indeed the concepts) quite interesting, and I'm sure the manga was less painful (often the case), but the topic was on anime...I just really really wish they'd given the characters more than a constipated monosyllable... =P

And also, the fact that every main character can blow up the solar system makes it sort of unspecial, don't you think? I'd get sick of them being like 'OMG, it's [insert boss here]! She/He/It is level 1000!' and then they beat it (after 10 episodes of grunting) and then next time it's like 'OMG! it's [insert boss here] - She/He/It is level 1,000,000!!' and they beat it anyway. And the next one is level 1,000,000,000,000 or something equally improbable, until the levels are like Yen, and the number isn't really as big as it looks.

Despite this, I will agree that even the anime was oddly hypnotic - I watched it every afternoon after school...so if nothing else, my opinion is has a solid foundation in experience. ;-)

I've been watching anime for years, and it was anime that got me into the Japanese language and culture in the first place. I was heavily into it, especially in the 90s, when good series like Fushigi Yuugi, Flame of Recca, and Houshin Engi were the norm. I was even okay with it when InuYasha was popular, and quality of anime started to go downhill with the Series that Went On Forever.

I still love it, and I still go to conventions, sing anime music, and have anime backgrounds on my computer...but I'm starting to go more lukewarm to anime series, and lean more towards games. Even when I buy things at conventions, it's usually imported games and memorabilia rather than box sets, and half the time I don't care what goes online.

I think most of it is the Weaboos, and the fanbrats. I admit, I've written my fair share of fanfic, which I don't think is a bad thing. It's when you make everyone Japanese, write poorly-written OCs in fanfic (A cardinal sin I've committed in my youth and I am openly admitting to. Ah, to be young...), and write random Japanese you don't understand and brag that you know the language...that annoys me.

And now even modern translations of anime and manga cater to the weaboo crowd, throwing down suffixes and Japanese words like they know what they're talking about.

To a Japanese major like me, it's insulting.

It doesn't help that nowadays, most anime is just boob jiggling, panty shots, and moe...

The Weeaboos. They piss me off.

And as personal preference, I dislike the dissonance between the money action shots and the almost static conversations.

-EDIT-
Also, be careful with these threads. They usually tend to devolve into debates between Weeaboos, detractors, and intelligent people who get caught in the crossfire.
wtf is a weeaboo?

It's all the same. They are all rehashes and copies of each other, almost to a tee. The ones that happen to be innovative and well written usually tend to be labeled as "classics", since you know.. they're not painful to watch.
This. This is exactly the problem. It's not ANY of the options in the poll, just the fact that anime has gone downhill lately, just like video games. This too shall pass, but not without a lot of effort.

But the obsessive fans... the damn obsessive weaboo fans. I might be interested in anime if I could find people who can just enjoy it, without it being some big example of how japan is superior in everyway to every other nation.
Oh, there are a LOT of awesome anime nerds. Many are friends of mine. A lot of it has to do with where you look, though.
The only problem with saying "they're all the same" is that this statement applies to every form of entertainment and media. Sturgeon's Law says 90% of everything is crap, and this applies pretty universally with entertainment.

That said, I'm generally just not that big a fan of the anime art style. Sure, there are some unique looking ones out there, so please don't start going "[Show X] is so different" (this is intended for the general Escapist population, not Semudara). I can appreciate Miyazaki's style because it tends to be simultaneously more realistic and stylized, if that makes sense.

Other than the fact I hate dubs. Which isnt a problem since subs are easy to find and so isnt a problem. Amine comes in so many variations that even school bullies and sports nuts would be able to find something to suit them. If you dont like that series, dont watch it. Problem solved.

As such, I have no problem with anime.
