Project Natal is not the Wii. It's a step beyond the Wii.

If it actually works consistently then it could be very good.
He's got it right, the techonology, if it works, will be a step beyond the wii.

I am kind of glad that after those microsoft (wii knockoff) remotes pictures were release that microsoft didn't go down that route.

How does Natal make the 360 like the Wii? Honestly? It's a motion capture controller. It doesn't change the games - and while there probably will be some shovelware attached to the motion capture gimmick it's not going to make Microsoft stop releasing quality titles as well, and they can do far more with this than Nintendo has done with the Wiimote.

Remember when they thought voice recognition technology would revolutionize... everything? And then as is they barely have it kinda working some of the time. This will be the same. In theory it looks great, and they definitely should put time and money into this to improve it, but it will be a long, long time before something like this is feasible on a grand scale.

Sometime after they fix the voice recognition's whole "delete that" sounding like "rape the innocent" problem.
The suspicion that the technology would fall short of expectations was my main fear as well, but the gaming media have had their hands on it... well actually they haven't, which is the point... but anyway, they report it actually works the way it was demonstrated. Voice recognition is a problem because of the huge range of voices and accents. However faces are largely all the same unless you've had some kind of horrible accident, facial expressions are universal, and there's really only a limited range of motion a game has to be aware of when you're playing. If you mime jumping out of the car during a race and running into the crowd, you're going to have problems representing that on screen.
But if you do that your race is over anyway.

No it's a gimmick

If you even glance at the tech demo it all looks a bit staged anyway.

It reminds me a lot of the eye toy so if they sell it the way PS2 sold it, like a game, it'l be alright. I looks pretty good but it's not gonna work on a lot of games which means the xbox is gonna get a load of wii type games *removes own eyes*

But the voice activation thing kinda worries me, as everyone knows voice activation is crap and can never seem to understand what you say.

Does anybody know if they're gonna make it a control replacement or like an eye toy kinda game thing?

Admitedly i havnt seen the videoyet, but every description i've heard makes it sound like an eyetoy, whats the difference?
This is pretty much what I thought. It sounds like it might be a good idea and produce some innovative titles, but I really can't see this sort of thing working for your average fps-space-marine-shoot-em-upfest, though I would love to be proven wrong.

Natal reminds me of eye-toy for the PS2. Only that Natal is a hell lot slower and you can't do anything decent with it except fitness games.

I don't think so, because if it's a failure, I don't think developers and such would think it would be a good idea to carry on making games for it. However I do quite like the look of the fighting thing that I saw, but I'll bet it's going to be buggy as hell.

I just hope this whole thing will be something that goes along "normal" Gaming, instead of replacing it.

I said in a different thread that while something like Natal (although i think the chances are better with Sonys thingie) could work for many genres, however i doubt that it works as good as the usual method in many games.

And while new gaming concepts would be certainly interesting, i don't want to "lose" the games i'm used to...

Of course, this is just a replacement of those 3D helmets and gloves we've seen since the 80's. Remember playing Descent with such an expensive helmet? Now you can have the same experience and you don't need to put on the Power Glove. One step closer to socially accepted gaming. I'm all for it.

This is something I found that washed a fair bit of my skepticism away...

(look, I know it's IGN, but run with it...) http://au.xbox360.ign.com/articles/991/991348p1.html

Imagine how cool the Milo program would be in an RPG...

MS has been trying to get nintendo's casual market for a couple of years: remember last year's presentation? You have to admit, this is at least more interesting than that movie thing.
I also think it's funny that the hardcore xbots are so excited about it as it's not really going to do them any favors. This natal thing is pretty cool but it's more for the types of games you play on the wii and general operation of the console, it's not going to be for the shooters and other hardcore games. It's going to be really cool for parents who bought their kids a 360.

Same with the ps3-motes.

The only victims are us hardcore gamers, who really just want more great games like Bioshock or CoD4 to play until our fingers bleed.
ahahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahhaha

But I dont see why anybody would try to separate the controller from gaming. Yeah! Let's pay 200 dollars for a mediocre gaming experience that hardly compares to the actual, cheaper thing! All right! And Milo. Fucking Milo. DAISY DAISY GIVE ME YOUR ANSWER DO

Here is the vid! [http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/Project+natal/video/x9haih_microsoft-e3-2009-press-conference_videogames] After watching this I can safely say, HOLY SHIT! Its like they perfected the wii! You just got owned nintendo!
I hope they keep the controller though. I like using it.
