So yeah, the Playstation network recently got a new section in it's store for Playstation 2 games. I'm not really sure what to make of this, the list is pretty small right now and it does kind of make sense, but I thought they had removed PS2 backwards compatibility on the grounds that the actual PS2 still sold well enough to warrant it still being produced.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just put backwards compatibility back into the system via an update or future models of the system? As far as I know most BC is done via emulation anyway and the average PS3 has a pretty large hard drive so space isn't an issue.

As it stands, you can play most PS1 games on the system be they bought from the store or your own physical copies so why not do the same thing for PS2 games?

Sony's going to do whatever the heck they decide to do with this, but it'd be nice to be able to play the PS2 games I own physical copies of on it as well as any digital ones I buy.

It's not quite that simple. In order for it to be BC with physical disks, it would need to have an actual PS2 built into the system. Which is what they did for the original PS3.

I recall a programmer explaining how mindcrushingly difficult keeping an emulator like that working would be on this forum. Maybe he'll show up again and provide some insight.

I like this because I get to play games I missed when they were around in the past. I do have a backwards compatible fat and I love it to death but its nice to see popular games up there that I never got to play before.

Honestly, I can't see myself participating in this. I own a functioning PS2. Better yet, I own a first generation PS3.

They would need to add some rarer or more interesting games to peak my interest.

I'm really excited for this, I just hope they start adding some games I've actually fucking heard of, but I guess it's better this way. . .

Honestly, it depends what games they put up. If they just go through the top selling PS2 games, it's a bit of a waste of time. I mean most of us played GTA: Vice City or Final Fantasy X.
But then it's nice to think that some younger gamers who never had access to these titles at the time will want to try them out.
But i'm certainly not against them putting up games which now are harder to find or those that didn't see such a huge original release such as Rez or Fahrenheit.
Of course the option is still there to simply not buy any of them at all. However if it turns into the PSOne Classics section on the PSN (in the EU at least) which is just a bunch of garbage games i wouldn't take a second look at then i'm really not interested in the slightest.

So now--in their efforts to monetize PS2 games on PS3--you can either buy them and play them on a backwards-compatible PS3, download them off PSN, or buy one of the several HD compilations that've been released. It seems like in the past decade game companies have really done a 180° on this backwards-compatible thing.
