I'm more concerned about multiplayer here, I'm aware Quake 4 is meant to have a good campaign but, I'm not too fussed about it if I'm honest, I just want a good multiplayer experience.
Quake 4 is almost all campaign. By current #ahem# standards it's a great campaign, ten plus hours long, lots of violence and few skyscraper sized enemies. No good if you want multiplayer.

Quake 3 is your bet, there is Quake Live, it's free, you want it. Quake 3 proper has a tremendous number of mods floating about, although what's still active these days I don't know.

Completely different games.

Quake 3 is an arena shooter with no real campaign (the campaign is just more arena shooting).

Quake 4 is an indifferent corridor shooter, and you can happily skip it in favour of pretty much any other corridor shooter ever.

I meant get Quake 1 for the SP. It has the bets of the lot. Well, I haven't played Q4 but it's meant to be shit.
Quake 4 has suffered for coming out in the era of Halo/Call of Duty. It was pretty old school even in 2004, more like Quake 2 with bigger everything than anything else. I thought it was really a lot of fun, not least the homing nail gun.

Quake 1 is the only Quake worth playing in my opinion. I really wish they had kept that same aesthetic for the whole series.

Quake 1 didn't have an aesthetic. It had like 3 different kind of levels that were mashed together from various game ideas.
I knew someone was going to say that. I guess I should have said, the gothic aesthetic instead of the tech one.

I wish people still played Quake 4 online. It may not be great, but I still think it is a lot of fun. I've never experienced Quake 3, though, so that might explain it.

For shits and giggles I installed Q4 to see what the score is and there were certainly a few full servers in vanilla, let alone Q4Max which was the goto mod for Q4 online.

It's not bad at all, damn sight better than most shooters on the market today but there were a few teething troubles around its launch which seems to resonate today with some people.
