i tend to put down the controller during cut scenes.

having to pick it back up again for something like that is just frustrating.

and i also feel that if they occur during gameplay, they break the flow.

The latest Prince of Persia is a good way to show how not to make your game based around QTE.

There are games that pull it off though.

Like I always say: we were tolerant of them when the controls were one stick and one button (Dragons Lair) but if they can't make intuitive controls with all the sticks, buttons, and motion controls we have now, they're just being lazy.

I hope they're moving beyond it. Look at Fallout 3's vats: it allows you to watch the cinematic display because you act tactically instead of staring at the part of the screen where the command will come from.

QTE's are not even a distinct feature. The only major difference (if any) between a QTE and "normal" gameplay is the use of an indicator. It's the most ridiculous thing to "hate" in a game because 99% of everything you do in a game could be turned into a QTE if the developer put an indicator on the screen!

I think if they are done well (GOW) I don't mind them and they're a useful mechanic. If they're shoe-horned in they're terrible and take away the immersion of a gameworld.

I'm impartial. They can be done right, like in God Of War or Resident Evil 4. But I hate when they get thrown into games randomly. I also dislike when people take yahtzee's every word as a word from god.
Or they can be done extremely wrong like in Resident Evil 4, where theres like 10 of them (press not to die type) durring a single cutscene where leon talks with Krauser.
That scene was prolyl the ass-hole of an otherwise great game.

But they seem very appropriate when used proberbly.

I dont mind some, I dislike ones where you die if you dont press X in time. I dont mind Mercs 2's QTE's tho.

They're alright, but only if they are not over used.

I actually like quick-time events, i don't know what Yahtzee and his little fanboy clones are yabbing on about how they are the death of video-games, it tests your reflexes and are fun little tid-bits to gameplay.

They're good if you can work them into the gameplay so that QTE's are used regularly, and in recognizable situations. For example, if it's established early on that a certain attack used by a certain enemy can be countered with a QTE, then by all means allow the player to dodge in that way.

But get them the hell away from my cutscenes. I want to watch a pretty show and hear some well-written dialogue, and I certainly do not want to die from a total bullshit excuse for gameplay.

I don't like them as a general rule, because normally I let my guard down during cutscenes, so I am often unprepared for them when it comes up.
Although I will probably try Heavy Rain, since I know that it is just one big quick time event, and so I will be prepared.

Quick-Time events are not so bad, and I actually like them. They just need to be used better. 'Press X to not die' may be the wrong way. Mercenaries 2 uses quicktime events alot. Only one of them kills you for failing, and you just get pushed back a half a minute.

Plus they usually look cool without just beign a cinematic.

I voted impartial, though only because there is no option between that and a near orgasmic love of the mechanic in the poll. I was always pretty good at QTE so they never provided much of a problem for me. The only time they seem to be able to severely hamper my ability to enjoy a game is when they come out of nowhere and are completely unexpected or are the only way to defeat a boss/enemy (Force Unleashed, I'm looking at you).

As far as complaints about the usually cinematic results of successfully completing a QTE infringing on the player's ability to play the game, I would say that, if well done, does not take the player or the game out of the context of what is going on. Take the God of War series and the regular sequence of killing a cyclops. You can choose to ignore the QTE and just beat the ever-loving shit out of the beast with your twin blades of awesome, or you can participate in the event for a quick (relatively) easy kill, and while killing the cyclops, the actions taken by the character generally reflect the type of action that normally would occur when a given button is pressed outside of the event. X jumps the character on top of his shoulders, square (I don't remember the controls, forgive for errors) stabs the eye, triangle stabs the eye harder, etc. When it comes down to it, a QTE done well is not much different than allowing a character to have free reign over the controls.
