What do you guys think of quick time events? Personally I think it depends on the game. I kind of like them, In "Just Cause", "Mercenaries 2" and the Resident Evil games. I think they can be a good way to end boss fights but can be annoying when they randomly come out of nowhere in cut scenes. What do you think?

Also thanks to the mods for locking that last thread where everything got all glitchy, sorry for the trouble.

They can work. If the games will tell you (not literally of course) that QTEs are a big part so you'll always be ready, that's fine, however, playing the Clive Barker's Jericho game, it shows how not to do QTEs.

(Warning, long and in caps. No actual spoilers, however.)

GREAT WORK.
HERE'S ANOTHER BATCH OF ANNOYANCES."

I had written a nice lengthy answer before you foolishly had your last post locked for the sake of a poll, and to be honest I really cannot be bothered to re-write it all so I shall summarise.

- They can be good if they fit the game e.g. Dead Space.
- They are bad when they are in multiplayer e.g. Gears of War 2.
- Nobody seemed to hate them before Yahztee mentioned them.

lol, I guess that would be an example of the bad kind of quick time events, Have you played resident evil 5 though, I thought the final quick time event sequence was pretty epic

I've never like them, I'm really bad at them. No lies, I just suck at them and thus I find them extremely annoying and unnecessary.

They're good sometimes, like for finishing moves when you've already won a fight and have the chance to either finish normally or see a supercool move take place. Other times too, they can be okay. The whole "PRESS X NOT TO DIE!!!11111" thing is just stupid though.

And if anyone votes the 'Yahtzee' option on the poll, I will personally find that person through their IP address and give the IP address to /b/, as well as firebomb their house with rotting eggs and dog poo. You have been warned...

They're great in some games (Gears 2 for example). This thread is going to attract a lot of Yahtzee noobs though...

I've got the eggs, matches and dogs if you've got the IP.

It's good to see that everyone doesn't just immediately adopt Yahtzee's opinion. He's hilarious, but people really need to think for themselves now and again.

As with all things, they can be good or bad.

Sometimes they are appropriate. If the quick time events play a big enough role in gameplay, then I can tolerate them. However if they occur to frequently then they are annoying. If they don't occur often enough, then they are also annoying because they always catch you off guard.

However, I will never like the "mash A button repeatedly" quick time events. Either they are so easy that it's next to impossible to screw them up, or they are so hard that you constantly lose to them. All they do is make your fingers hurt.

Nah, but I've played R.E. 4. Wii edition. The knife fight was a very good example of how to doQTEs right.

Depends on how they're used. If it's just one or two in a brief span then that's okay with me. Marvel Ultimate Alliance had them and I enjoyed it. However a long sequence in such a brief time span that can only be accomplished by clairvoyance, GameFAQs or trial and error are not okay (I'm lookin' at you Seong Mi-Na's SC3 ending).

Kingdom Hearts did them quite well i thought, as well as Gears, and of course Resident evil 4. They can be stupid and pointless of course, but sometimes they're cool.

I dislike them very much, I'd rather just watch the cut scene. They're a lazy tool for developers to make the games look like as if they had more gameplay than they actually do.

Oh no! Stop that sweary Englishman that has quadrupled the amount of hits the Escapist gets! Stop him!

Y'know Yahtzee actually justified his opinion on QTEs and to be honest I do rather agree with him, if used randomly in cut-scenes (where in many cases I have my controller resting on my knees anyway) which are designed to catch you out so you have to watch the same Fecking video 3 or 4 times to actually progress then I believe I have reason to hate the QTEs.

However if used in fairly predictable situations which can be completed in the first try then I actually believe they are a fair test of reaction speed and concentration. But the penalties for failure must not be too harsh.

Depends. If they only give you, say, a second and a half to press it, no. And it depends where they put it. If you put it in boss fights its nice, because it's a way to do awesome manuevers that you couldn't do normally.

Also cutscenes. They prevent you from falling asleep.
