Recently I was stuck in Dragon Age, because I only used quicksave, and I was stuck in an "unwinnable" battle. It got me thinking, what is better. Having the game save for you, or choosing when to save.

Honestly I think that it should work in tandem, with the game saving at key points, and you being able to save in between. Because now I've lost almost two days of my life because I can't defeat the golems of Orzammar.

What do you think?

i like both.

it's a great security to have the game make checkpoints for you.
and when you don't trust it yourself do a quicksave.

works like a charm.

Have to agree, the combination of the two is by far the best idea.

Nothing worse than Autosave saving milliseconds before you get battered in the face though, you reload and get battered in the face again and again... and again =(

Firstly, thanks for the heads up because that?s where I am!

Secondly, doesn't DA:O do both? I have both autosaved and quicksaved files.

Thirdly, I prefer autosaves but only so long as they are quite regular. It isn't much of an automatic save if you need to repeat your previous two hours after missing a jump.

I really want a pause button that lets you hibernate the console, or turn it off, and then resume from that single save slot.

- I don't want to have to finish a quest to have it autosave my progress.

- I don't want to have to visit a special location to have it open a save menu (e.g. Majora's Mask).

- I don't even want multiple quicksave at any point as it just drains the challenge and jeopardy from each encounter.

I do like short levels that can be reattempted on higher, or lower, difficulty settings - as well as replayed in any order (as in Halo: CE).

It does, but what gets me is it's all in the same slot...

I was really tempted to put auto save as it tends to make me try harder to get to the next save point...However, it can be extremely annoying to keep going back to a certain point only to do it all over again. So in retrospect, both together is good for me!

Don't you hate that, I have done that before and I hate it. Even if you are not very far into the game, it?s such a pain to have to restart the game or go back to an earlier save because you created an unwinnable loop. That is one reason why I can?t choose one over the other, because both are good to have in a game.

Having the game save for you is good for those times, when we for some reason, forget to save. When the game save for you,and you do create an unwinnable loop, At least you will only have to go back to the last checkpoint vs. restarting the whole game.

Choosing when to save is also great especially for those ?unrepeatable ?moments (you know, when you do something so awesome that you have to save it because you know your properly never be able to do it again), And for those times when you know your need a save, like before a boss battle or after you just overcome a big obstacle.

I think bayonetta had one of the best save systems ever, it would constantly save every checkpoint without interrupting gameplay (unless you forget to file save and load a different file) it never got in the way and had many mid-boss checkpoints.

I prefer to choose when I save, but I also prefer to save whenever I want, no exceptions. Life can get in the way, and I like being able to stop playing whenever I need to.

It depends on what game we're talking about. In shooters I like to be able to quicksave after a tough battle, and in games (like survival horror) I think quicksaving took all the tension out of the game.
