As you may be aware, an increasingly popular internet campaign [http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2228594104&ref=nf] has set its goals rather high, by attempting to make Rage Against The Machine's 1992 single, Killing In The Name, beat the usual X Factor tune to the UK christmas 2009 number 1 spot.

Although the money will end up with Sony either way, I think RATM reaching nummber 1 would still be a big middle finger to the X factor and British popular music (or 'System', if you like) as a whole.

So what's your opinion of this whole campaign? Will you be buying "Killing In The Name", from 13th December?

Being British I would hate for that too happen. X Factor is an interesting and intelligent show, the "pop music" as you call it has brought about some very talented people and I am glad that it happened.

Seriously though; Killing in the name isn't that good of a song, but I would love to rub it in the face of my friends who are crackers for the X Factor.

This is ironic.

"Fuck you I won't do what you tell me"

Like hell am I getting an album I already own just to stop another artist who I don't care about from a show I don't care about get No.1 in a chart that I don't care about.

God damn I just don't care. People should just not buy any albums over christmas. As impossible as it is, it would be hilarious if no cds were bought at all.

I'd love to see this happen, but I'm not sure it will.
I'm sick of television talent shows, so I'll probably buy it.

Simon Cowell's reaction when he heard of the campaign made me laugh. He actually sounded a bit hurt and scared at the same time...

This isn't going to happen, but prove me wrong if you will.

The problem is that the general public outnumbers you. They always will. But like I said, go for it.

I swear someone tried this last year...

Also - The band (or songwriters) would get mechanical royalties, so not all the money will end up with Sony.

A campaign like this crops up every year, and it never works. Mainly because people like the idea, but aren't willing to pay for it, and why should they? Nobody that I know cares for the music charts at all.

I'm not buying it again, but if it reached Christmas No. 1 it'd be fantastic.

Oh and I hate X-Factor with a passion.

Why is "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" not a poll option?

These guys summed it up much better than I could. As much as I like the song, i'm not inclined to buy it again just for some pointless campaign.

In the Netherlands, something like this was done a few years back. There was a television show Starmaker that was producing hit singles, and a bunch of people (from the satirical TV show Kopspijkers) made a single called "One Day Fly" that was meant to push the Starmaker singles off the #1 position in the charts... and it worked.

But yeah, as said before... I'm not going to buy someting I already have just to prove a point I don't care about. Besides, if RATM reaches the #1 spot on the charts, all they have proven is that their hype and advertising is better than X-Factor's. It's just as commercial.

What about not buying ANY singles this season? I think that'd send a far more powerful (and RELEVANT!) message than simply switching commercial product X for commercial product Y.

(I realise that, not being a UK resident, I won't influence this no matter what. But let's ignore that for a sec :p)
