I prefer 'em to being able to see any enemies scampering around on the main screen (although this sometimes has it's advantages when looking for rare encounters/items etc)
Althought there's nowt more controller-smashing-against-the-wall annoying than finally getting past a hard boss battle by the skin of your teeth, then being dumped in a random battle before you can heal/save, and dying. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!

FFVIII did it the best. If you got sick of random encounters you could junction Diablos with a bunch of shit so you got "encounter none" or "encounter half" which you could de-activate at your leisure. It wasn't something you could do early in the game, it really helped out when you were trying to find certain GFs and not be interrupted by useless baddies.

I grit my teeth and accept them when they are there, but they're a complete relic of the NES, there are better ways to do encounters, and plenty of JRPGs have done them.

As long as they do not get in the way of the rest of the game, I'm happy.

Holy Magic Century/Quest64 suffers from this problem the worst. Although you need to explore maze-like levels, you become disoriented during every random encounter as a result of the camera system. That said, I still love the animation the character goes through after winning an encounter.

I have no issues with it when you can avoid them when you really want to, such as Pokemon: stay out of the tall grass or bring a few Repels with you. But when you have no choice it can real old real fast.

Why? There are plenty of JRPGs around that don't use random battles. Look up NeutralDrow's suggestions, as well as Paper Mario, Radiata Stories, and even Sonic Chronicles.

OT: I don't really care. As long as the battles don't get in the way of the rest of the game, it's okay by me.

I absolutely hate them.
Mainly because they don't make much sense.
Say I'm a character with a high level sneak skill.
Are you honestly expecting me to believe that I was somehow ambushed by a giant group of anything?!?!?!

yes because sneaking is a worthless skill... (it never worked out for me games with sneaking skills (where it's an option not a prerequiste)

I LOATHE them! Utterly LOATHE them! Final Fantasy I almost caused me to have a nervous breakdown since I was fighting the same damn enemies with the same damn music over and over and over again... Madness...
Madness? ... THIS. IS. FINAL FANTASY!

Seriously though I agree, I find them very outdated.

Earthbound did "random" battles the best. You saw them on your map. They would engage you, or - best part, flee! And if you were SO very strong, the battle would be decided before the screen could even switch views. :) "FWOOSH!" victory. ;)

I miss that game.

Personally loath them with a passion.
For me they ruin gaming experience as its yet another element of gameplay thrown to random chance.
I would like to play the game, not sit there doing nothing more than do the programmed equivalent of rolling dice.

Are you seriously implying that Earthbound is the only game to do this?
Are you seriously getting serious? All I said was I thought Earthbound did this the best. It's certainly the only game I've experienced that did it, but THAT is not what I said, nor meant.

Ease up, hun.

I don't mind them just as long as they don't happen every 10 bloody seconds!
Looking at you here, Final Fantasy X.
ffx is not that bad. worse i can remember is suikoden 5. not a blink time passes between random encounters.

i like how legend of the dragoon gave you a little warning at least... and there is a potion to actually reset the... thing... so if you had the cash you could just skip throughevery battle.

although i defenitly prefer when you actually SEE the enemies, like in eternal sonata

I don't mind them at all, but I haven't played a game with them in years. They've been pretty much dropped in recent years, in favor of being able to see the enemies on the map before you fight them.

Does this mean you might re-evaluate your opinion after playing Eternal Sonata, Baten Kaitos, or any of the Tales series?
Backpedal right now Drow, the old Tales series is filled with random battles.
Do any of the ones pre-Symphonia matter?

I'm speaking about those games where you are wandering through the landscape of a fictional universe,(such as Final Fantasy VII) with nothing to be seen, then all of a sudden the screen warps and you are in a battle. I personally like them myself, whether that's noglastia or whatever, but I think that there will be many more people out there that hate them, because of the lack of realism involved.
I prefer them over the annoyance inn FFXII of having to zone away and come back for respawns.
Then again, I'm a grinder. In any rpg game I own, i always grind. I just love the daily grind, it's awesome.
