Gonna say 4 because I hear about all kinds of terrible things that people do, yet I know so many great people and know that there are people out there who are pretty selfless. It's all balanced out really.

I chose 8, because for all our flaws I can't think of a single thing in this universe which is greater than humanity.
I can think of plenty, like black holes. If there is something even more powerful out there it fills me with dread.
For some odd, bizarre reason I don't think he meant "greater" as in "more mass".
If we are talking about collective ego, humanity is probably greater than a black hole. I chose three because many humans are just animals pretending to be civilized. There are many wars people are starving all of the time, democracy is only proof to how many willfully ignorant people exist. Many people are still racist, sexist, and chauvinistic. Humanity has not left the cradle of the mind that is the Earth, and doesn't plan to. That only reason why I didn't give humanity a one is because there are a few people, shining examples of the best parts of humanity, that are willing to go through their lives and never be noticed as the heroes that they are.

But black holes don't have mass. They are great though...

It's an interesting truth. Centuries ago someone asked someone else a similar question, and 1 wasn't low enough. This lead to the invention of negative numbers, to express the disgusting habits of humanity.
...i'm lying of course, but hey. Why not make a joke? After all, OUR LEGACY IS A PERVERTED FUCKING JOKE. This is the only species that could create such ridiculous abnormalities like religion, pop music, and nuclear weapons.

I chose 8 because despite the fact that there are some major assholes out there, most of us are basically good. Hell, it's not like we see a new Hitler pop up every five seconds.

A black hole is more powerful, granted, but greater? Nothing else known in the universe can compare to the human imagination, our struggles, our joys, our pains, our love.
I doubt that humanity is the smartest and most complex life-form in the universe if there are other sentient lifeforms out there (mostly because I'm being optimistic and like to think things can get better then humanity). If there aren't we win by default, though.

5, because we can never be perfect.

There's never going to be an absolute consensus because everyone has different opinions which diverge further as they evolve, as a result conflict will always be present.

On a fundamental level, conflict isn't caused by religion, poverty, race et al, it's caused by everyone being different. What we're trying to do is mesh all these different cogs into a society, and it's never going to fit 100%.

So is there room for improvement? No, but hey it'll never get any worse.

[sub][sub]Thanks for the interesting thread ~Sev[/sub][/sub]

Yesterday i would have given us a 4, now it's a 2. We are the only animal on this planet that kills members of our own race for no reason, other animals attack their own when they start to slow the heard down or to show who the boss is or even out of mercy but us, we can just have a bad and decide to fuck everyone else over. Plus I recently found out that there is such a thing as intelligent bigotry, what the fuck could be more terrifying than that?

What? Since when? I'll admit I'm not terribly well-informed in Astronomy, but how else would they have a gravitational pull?

I'm going with seven since to me as a human myself, i can't think of anything better than humanity and its creations has ever happened to me. I take away one point because we screw ourselves over quite often.

It's a singularity. The eccretion disc has mass, but the "black hole" itself doesn't.

Dolphins. Dolphins have murder. Sexual murder, even.

[sub]A lot of primates too. I'm sure others know some more species that I missed.[/sub]

What about the other life forms on Earth? To say we're the best is like saying Hitler was the best German at the time. As someone else has already said in this thread:
Douglas Adams said:
"Man has always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much...the wheel, New York, wars and so on...while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man...for precisely the same reason."
