Poll: Rayman Legends purchase?

Steam's got an Ubisoft sale going on this weekend. There are some decent titles on sale, but the only one I'm interested in is Rayman Legends. It, however, comes with the atrocious Uplay DRM system. I'm weighing the pros and cons. What are your thoughts? Yay/nay on the purchase?

Thanks all.

As a game Rayman Legends is absolutely amazing up there with the very best platformers of all time imo and easily the best Rayman game by a large margin much better than origins (which was good but not great imo) and the musical levels are quite possibly my favourite levels in any platformer ever they are pure genius, I couldnt help but smile when I played them.

So as a game its definitely worth it but on Steam and with Uplay on top urgh I dunno im not sure I could deal with that so its up to you I also feel it would lose something by not being able to use the WiiU touch screen (not much mind you). I personally got it for the WiiU I dont touch Ubis releases on the PC and try and stay away from Steam as well but its at a decent price, especially as the console prices have gone back up.

Rayman Legends is an absolutely fantastic game, it's pretty much perfect in every aspect from the execution of aesthetic, to sound design, to creative level design, to balancing and meaty challenge. It also manages to be hard without being frustrating. My personal favourite moments from the game being the spy missions and the music missions at the end of each zone.

However, if Rayman Origins can be played without Uplay, I'd recommend getting Origins as that, too, is a fantastic game of very close quality.

Speaking of the Ubisoft sale: A whole bunch of AssCreed games, and a few good games like Rayman Legends. But no FarCry 1? My favourite game?! I am very disappoint Ubisoft.

Well, it's a really good game, especially at that price. (Though getting obsessive about the couple of final grinding UPlay cheevos is NOT recommended.) UPlay didn't really interfere with playing the game, as I recall it. It comes down to whether your dislike of having it installed is worth not playing it. I got it from a previous Steam sale (at twice the price I think) and haven't regretted. Guess that's a "yay".

And now, since I already have the pestilential Uplay, I might even buy Child of Light or something.

Yeah, now that I see Child of Light and Valiant Hearts on sale as well, I'm more tempted to make the deal with the devil... Damn you, Ubisoft. If it weren't for your Montpellier studio, I'd have no interest in doing business with you whatsoever.

Besides Rayman I'd recommend Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a good arcadey FPS with a novel method of storytelling (I have the 360 version so can't comment on port quality)

I voted nay. I found Rayman Legends to be the most singularly overrated platformer in all of gaming history. I played it for a few hours and never went back to it. The definition of polish without substance. The mechanism for getting past 'difficult' opponents is to walk up and tickle them into delirium, for fuck sakes.

Buy Super Meat Boy instead.

I gave it a yay. The game itself is awesome and it was the only game for me were Uplay worked flawlessly so far. Might have been just luck but with any other game that required Uplay I had massive problems requiring multiple uninstall/reinstall cycles for Uplay and other arcane tricks found in some Ubisoft forum or another.

I didn't think too much of it when I played it (albeit only for three or four hours altogether). The aesthetic, in particular, irritated me in a way that's difficult to describe. I also disliked the mechanic involving the little helper creature who will move platforms where you need them, or tickle enemies, because there's no real control or challenge in that feature-- you only press X for him to do whatever is needed to let you pass, and he'll fly right over to the next thing he's needed for.

What in the hell is that supposed to mean? I'm serious, I don't get it.
Family friendly platforms require deep and provoking themes and game mechanics apparently.

Yay, although I prefer origins over legends. The new mechanic of having Murphy open doors and activate platforms can be frustrating, as well as other gimmicks e.g. being turned into a duck seriously slows down the tempo of the levels, which can be a bit frustrating for a game where its large appeal comes from going through levels in a speedy manner. I'd recommend Origins for a more pure 2D platformer, as well as a more challenging one.

You've never heard the expression of "polishing a turd" or "putting lipstick on a pig"?

In video games, it means that game is well designed as far as graphics, animations and environment goes -- just what you'd expect from a big developer -- but the gameplay itself is far less satisfying.

That's not the case at all. The game is intended for everyone, not just kids, so my opinion of will be from the standpoint of an adult.

I mean, I feel Legends is a lot more dumbed down and easier than the first game so I'm actually with you on that one.

In the Wii U version it's the person with the tablet controller that does Murphy's job, which changes dramatically how those levels play out. That pretty much single-handedly makes it the definitive version of the game.

I only played Legends in multiplayer, but I'd certainly agree that it felt easier. Then again, the game actually is lot easier in multiplayer in the first place - and a lot more fun to play.

Yeah, it's the definitive version of the game if YOU ACTUALLY HAVE SOMEONE TO PLAY WITH. On your own, it's an obnoxious mechanic that shows how little foresight the developers had for people that like to play it on their own. The Vita version is even worse, because on the murphy levels you can only control Murphy and the character that is actually doing the platforming is an AI, which is the single stupidest design choice I have ever seen, and even worse because the AI is god fucking awful. I don't think I have ever cursed so much as I did when I had to baby sit Globox's fat, retarded ass through a level with Murphy. The singleplayer design choice for the Murphy levels on the Vita is so bad, I actively tried to avoid all Murphy levels to put off the amount of frustration and bullshit they put me through.

Well, I went ahead and bought the games (Rayman and Child of Light and Valiant Hearts). I haven't installed them yet, or bothered setting up a Uplay account, but all the same, they're bought and paid for. Thanks for the input, everybody.

By the by, Origins was a great game. Probably some of the most fun I've had with platformers in ages. I'm really looking forward to eventually playing the sequel. Maybe I'll even snag Origins again on PC; it not having Uplay tied to it is certainly a point in its favor.

Rayman Legends and Valiant Hearts are great games in my opinion and definitely worth getting. Haven't played Child of Light but I've heard some good things. Hope you enjoy them.
