So, what do you all think? Do real men take an active role in caring for their child(ren) or is that solely (or mostly) the job of the mother? I started this thread because I've been told that I'm not a "real man" for a number of reasons. I won't go on and on with them but will just give you the following short list: having medical knowledge (because being a nurse is a "woman's job"), not working on cars (mostly because I find it incredibly frustrating and always slip when working with the tools, busting my knuckles open. I have no problem changing tires, changing oil, or checking the fluid levels but, beyond that, I leave to professional mechanics), and because I take an active role in my daughter's upbringing (feeding her, changing her diaper, playing with her, etc. BTW, she will be 8 months old in about a week).

So, I just wanted to see how many people agree with them and how many think I'm in the right? What do you think? Any similar experiences? What did you do? What do you think?

OT: The person who says the above stuff the most is my father-in-law. Though, my brother-in-laws seem to agree.

XOT: I realize that some of those answers seem pointless but I wanted there to be the same number of "yes"s and "no"s.

It's your child and you are being the responsible one by taking care of her. Just tell your father-in-law to piss off whenever he says things against you because that's what most in-laws tend to do.

If caring for your flesh and blood doesn't make you a man, I don't know what does. You're a responsible father that does what he can for his child. What's not manly about that?

As far as other things like being all over cars and what not; People that think like that are stuck in the past. Manly men do what they can, do what they have to, and are responsible. Smart men don't screw with stuff then know nothing about, because they could make it worse.

Do what you do. Forget everything else.

Odd...I made a poll for this and it didn't show up. Oh well, I'll just read the responses instead.

A real man has male sex organs; A macho douche-pit will not change a diaper because he considers it to be the wife's duty.

It's perfectly normal to do all those things. I can change a tire and maybe put in new oil if i really needed to, but other than that, I'm right there with you.

It depends on the situation. Sometimes it can't be helped if the man is working. An ideal situation would working and both an active role in bringing up the children, but finance and work opportunities won't always allow it. A real man isn't one that brings in all the money, or the one that changes the diapers.

As long as you have a penis YOU ARE A MAN. I don't understand why people say, "You're a man when you do this and that because it's a man's stereotype!".

It makes you a good father. And the previous generation was really sexist. Well at least in South America it was. My mother told me "If you're girlfriend is going to be around you so much, the least she could do is clean your room." So I think you should just ignore what they're saying. You're making your wife happier, and have a very good job and most likely are supporting your family.

That's a great father and husband.

A real man is the guardian of his family - i.e. making sure the family is comfortable, in the modern day - so yeah, changing diapers doesn't detract from ones manlyness. Not to say, of course, that a woman can't be the family's guardian, but I think you get my drift.

I say you are a man, though you display certain (traditionally) immasculine traits.

Medicine and lack of mechanical know how do not a dainty man make.
There are a lot of things that can emasculate a man.
Spend 20+ minutes fussing with your hair, listening to the majority of modern pop music, gardening sheers to the family jewels.

It is very manly to roll up your sleeves and get dirty when the situation calls for it,
and that my friend is what you are doing. Congrats, here's a man card.

Real men do care for their children. My mate has a kid, she's about 8-10 months old and when his wife is working he take care of the kid and vice versa when he goes to work.

Besides remember what Don Corleone said " A man who doesnt spend time with his family isn't a real man"

Thanx, I'll put that on the bookshelf between my dogtags (was in the U.S. ARMY) and the cheese grater from my backyard wrestling days (It hurts when steel folding chair meets body...and a barbed wire wrapped baseball bat...and fire...and steel ladders...you get my drift).
