Do you prefer the large amount of options and extra time to develop strategy afforded by turn-based games?
Do you prefer the active constant content, and adrenaline of the real-time game?

Real time usually works best. Turn based requires more refinement to be balanced and work correctly, let alone be fun.

I enjoy turn based strategies, I like to think for a while. But usually real time works best because you feel a lot more of the action that way.

I do prefer real time combat, but sometimes I like to pause in the middle of the battle if things are getting hectic to work out the situation, like in Dragon Age or KotoR.

So it either Fire Emblem, Advance War vs Command and Conquer and Supreme Commander? I voting turn base but only because I suck at real time.

Horny Ico said:
Turn-based is fine in a context that doesn't involve lethal force. But why the Hell would anyone or anything in a fight to the death politely wait their turn? It's a preposterous concept that has ruined nearly every JRPG ever made, especially the good ones.
Surely the bad ones were already ruined because they were bad.

OT: It completely depends on the actual game itself. Some games mechanics (i.e. The Fallout series) are based around a turn structure from the pen & paper RPG but others (i.e. NeverWinter Nights) tried for a combination of real time and turn based mechanics. In the new Dragon Age they are trying to make it completely real time if that is how you choose to play it.

I like both. It really depends on the game. GRAW had great real time squad control combat, but Disgaea has great turn-based squad control combat. My personal preference though is the "pause and play" approach from Baldur's gate II, Dragon Age: Orgins, and KOTOR 1+2. So... a little bit of both?

Turn-based can offer a better challenge, if done right.
RT encounters usually become more a clusterfuck when they get hard, rather than demanding any real tactics.

Turn based strategy.

I can barely get the A.I. in the total war games to act properly. So it's technical thing. And I grew up with Fire Emblem.....sooooo...yeah.

Excellent comments so far. I am seeing a pattern in the comments and the split in the poll that suggests that real-time is preferred but with careful mechanics and the patented Dragon Age/ Mass Effect, temporary pause.

To add some more specifics to keep the thread going... What are examples of depth "devices"(for lack of a better term) in some of your favorite real-time games that include multiple player control?

That being Dragon Age Bumper selector, or Final Fantasy paradigms (I am going to call the latest Final Fantasy installments real-time contrary to reality).

Please continue to vote as well if this is your first comment. :)

well in real time, i prefer those to be shooter based.

but if i'm rpg'ing or doing a real strategy game, always turn based, thats why i absolutely love the "pause" effect that kotor/dragon age/NWN's/etc... offers, idk i just like pausing, doing a 360 of the battle, absorbing that and then changing what needs to be changed.

so essentially the occasional turn based, but love controlling when my turn happens =P

Racing against the ATB is more fun for me but that's not to say that turn based combat is without its merit.

Both types require you to attack carefully though, as you never know when you might've needed that character on standby for a quick heal or a buff.
