Allow me define this more accurately:

"Realistic" racing games is straightforward enough, I'm talking Gran Turismo, Forza, any racing game that uses real life cars or at least realistic cars.

"Unrealistic" racing refers to games like Mario Kart or F-Zero, where weaponry can be used or the gameplay is based around some other comical or unrealistic dynamic.

I think I generally prefer unrealistic games. As I have almost zero interest in cars, engines or mechanics, games like GT don't appeal to me in the slightest.

Please give your reasons as well.

My favourite racing game is Motorsport 2: Pacific Rift, I'm not sure if that's a serious racing gamer or a joke one, since there was very little in the way of customization (you could unlock new vehicles), and it didn't take its self to seriously (cars exploding left right a centre, people flaying off cliffs ect.). However, it had realistic vehicles and good graphics.

Y'know, I did actually think of that game when I made this thread, but I was hoping it wouldn't come up because I didn't want to add a "grey area" option to the list.

For the sake of simplicity, lets call it a "real" game.

Very well then, I prefer 'real' racing games, that said I've got nothing against Mario Kart or other games like it.

Hmmm... I love playing Burnout Paradise, but hate playing Forza 2 (too grindy). Overall, I'm middle ground -ish.

I like both.
Mario kart is awesome, but so is Gran Turismo.
I also like Need for Speed and Ridge Racer.

I prefer joke racing games and I also enjoy semi-realistic games like Burnout or PGR. Not a big fan of serious driving simulators.

Real driving games. I enjoy Gran Turismo, though to be honest I'm not really built for racing games.

I hate, hate, HATE Mariokart. I've never liked it. All the spinning and blurring and bright colours makes me feel ill and I always get lost and lose. Bah.

Joke racing games. A game in which a teeny weeny crash into a wall makes me lose my first place can go straight to the deepest circle of hell (or out of the window).

Joke. I perfer machine guns on my car instead of fuzzy dice.

Not to mention, I hate nascar and real racers have those. Wait What would burnout be?

Where does the original F-Zero fall? No wild weapons, or jokey jerkiness, but definitely not realistic. While I LOVE Grand Turismo and such, F-Zero holds a special place in my heart as one of my favorite racing games of all time. This is a tough one because "joke" racing games are really fun with friends. I remember when I first got Mario Kart: Double Dash on the GC. Me and a few of my buddies threw back a few beers and went into versus mode for a couple of hours. I was fun as shit. I dont really recall having fun like that on a multiplayer scale in a "real" racing game.

I'm not a fan of either. Prefer the Arcade stuff. Exciting to play but with none of the YAAAAAAWN!! of a Turismo or WRC. I'm playing through Burnout 3 again and will probably be one of those games I keep going back to. Did not get on with Paradise though. Those Gillette vans seemed highly suspect when you crash into them. Where as previous games you knew you fucked up, this time it just felt a bit sinister.

What about games that are kinda in between like Need for Speed or Burnout? They use real cars (in NFS anyway) but aren't really as real-life physics focused as Gran T, or Forza. Edit: Do those count as realistic by your poll?

I generally prefer arcadey racers to games like Gran Turismo so...yeah...Thats my answer

Good point. I've tweaked the options to incorporate this, so games like F-Zero now fall under "unrealistic".

Er... I'd class them as realistic (wow it's harder to define these games than I thought), as the cars used at least have a realistic appearance.

In between. Realistic enough to be beliveable, but not so realistic that it stops being fun. Burnout 3 got the balance fairly well, for instance.

Yay! Happiness at last. Well, sort of. I think this will clear up a lot of ambiguity too.

(While Grand Turismo is a difficult game, try placing first in Fire Field on Expert with the Golden Fox. Thats that tough shit)
