Simulators all the way! But I do enjoy the arcade racers though.

Where does the original F-Zero fall? No wild weapons, or jokey jerkiness, but definitely not realistic. While I LOVE Grand Turismo and such, F-Zero holds a special place in my heart as one of my favorite racing games of all time. This is a tough one because "joke" racing games are really fun with friends. I remember when I first got Mario Kart: Double Dash on the GC. Me and a few of my buddies threw back a few beers and went into versus mode for a couple of hours. I was fun as shit. I dont really recall having fun like that on a multiplayer scale in a "real" racing game.

At the risk of sounding like a smartass, I have absolutely NO clue who that dude is. I'm guessing by the way he's dressed, some kind of NASCAR racer. I dont follow NASCAR at all though. My name came from this handsome summbich right here:

I have to say my two favourite racing games Cell Damage (if you can all it a racing game) and Burnout Revenge so I'm gonna have to say unrealistic

where is the both option?
I like Burnout Paradise and i also like Forza 2. One game for unrealistic, one for realistic.

Unrealistic. I have PGR3 and Mario Kart Wii and I play Mario Kart way more. It's just fun to be unrealistic. If I wanted realism, I could go outside and drive a car.

Agreed. Depends on what I am in the mood for. Heck, my favourite racing games are the ones that are kinda both, like the Need For Speed series.

I don't drive and have no interest in cars in real life, so I absolutely cannot fathom the entertainment value in the realistic physics and micro-management of the tiniest things that comes with stuff like Gran Turismo. My cousin, however, is obsessed with it. Despite the fact that he can't drive either.

But yeah, give me a cartoon car and no instructions more complicated than 'press this button to make it go faster and this one to make it go round corners'.

unrealism is more fun. it lets the developers flex thier imaginations, without the shackles of realism

I prefer unrealistic since I enjoy games like Mario Kart 64, Twisted Metal and Rock N Roll Racing more than any realistic racing games.

I like both. I class them as 2 seperate genres in a sense. To me it's like comparing 3rd person shooters like Gears of War, to platformers like Banjo Kazooie.

Games like Mario Kart and F-Zero are so very different in how they play and handle to games like Forza and Gran Turismo... and even the 3rd option of games like Motorstorm and Burnout. Sure you could argue that in the end what brings them together into one category is the fact that they all have the same objective, getting into 1st place, but then if you think about it a lot of different game genres have similar objectives. Call of Duty - Get to the end of the level and if necessary eradicate any enemies that get in the way. Sonic - Same objective.

Sorry I went off into an alternate tangent, if I had to choose I probably would choose unrealistic racers just for the sheer fact that they tend to handle faster, and the feeling of speed in a game is quite indescribable.

I feel like realism takes way from the experience of sheer ridiculosity that can/should be achieved. Also, I like my games unrealistic, this goes for races as well.

Unrealistic, racing games need an edge to them, otherwise I'm just not interested. F-Zero is an example.

Except Ridge Racer, I loved that series.

I like realistic games, Gran Turismo and Dirt are great fun for me. I can't wait for Dirt 2, the feeling of speed and adrenalin are amasing. Rally Racing is one of the best Racing genras.

I love games like Mario Kart and Burnout more than Grand Turismo.

Of course, I would love to see a truely unrealistic racing game. A truely, truely unrealistic racing game. One in which you are racing on dinosaurs in the future and must obtain power-ups by eating spectators. Not all of them would be power-ups of course; some would give your dinosaur diarehha which can really screw up that lap. A racing game in which if you get into a high velocity wreck, you can litterally fly out of your car and risk being devoured by one of your opponents ... or devour them from the back of their steed [unless of course they're using an inorganic, mecha-saurous ... that has lazer-breath]
