Okay, so the only fighting games I've ever bothered with were DoA 3 + 4 (which were both bloody horrible) and now I'm in search for a new fighting game to play with friends and possibly my sister. I've never been particularly good at button mashing so one that's easy to learn would be good. Also as a side note: fuck the ratings system in this country, if I have the money for a game then I have the right to buy it and I won't accept the classic 'We're protecting the children" bullshit.

*exhales*

So which should I go for; MvC3 or MK?

Neither, go get Blazblue: Continuum shift. Super fun and its very new player friendly what with its tutorial.
Ninja'd.
OP, expect a few of these responses. As to the two you listed? MvC3 is very, very fast paced and takes some getting used to. MK is.....meh. Not outstanding in anyway.

I'm only going for MvC3 or MK. I personally think MK with it's brutal combat looks like something I'd enjoy, but my sister is a long time fan of Marvel. As I said before, I'm not a huge fan of fighters and I'll probably play it mostly when others come over. The possibility of a Super MvC3 is intriguing but I'm not sure if I'll still be interested by the time it comes out.

Go nuts.

Oh and while MvC3 isn't better than blazblue, it's way better than MK, MK is a casual gimmicky game for drunken people who wanna mess around.

Blazblue on the other hand has the best tutorials around so since you're not good at button mashing as long as you do them you will be able to play quite well.

You care about content or just fighting? MK has MvC3 beat in the content department (McC3 is barebones), but MvC3 is the better fighting game.

Honestly, it depends what you're after. I love both games, but I guess I prefer MvC3, because it's so chaotic. Mortal Kombat gives you more for you money though, it's got a lot of stuff in it.

Content as in moves, maps and characters? Well that didn't make the decision any easier.

No, content as in other random stupid modes with goals not what you normally consider your goals when you play a fighting game. Things like time attack mode, taken to the extreme, things just for messing around.

Oh and look at my post above, the link there has a lot of info about blazblue.

I'm something of a connoisseur of fighting games, and I gotta be honest; they're both excellent, and I think you'd probably have a great time no matter which one you ended up choosing. They're both fairly easy to pick up and play while also boasting leagues and leagues of technical depth, they're both bursting at the seams with content (perhaps slightly less so in MvC3's case), they both have thriving communities, both online and off. You can't lose.

Really, it comes down to what your taste in fighting games is like. The Marvel VS games are fast-paced and frantic, and MvC3 is no different; it's the kind of game where stuff is flying across the screen every second. Everything is very fast and over-the-top, sometimes to its detriment (in my opinion, anyway). Ultimately, the ability to keep up with that manic pace and do a lot of moves very, very quickly is the key to success.

Mortal Kombat, on the other hand, plays at a more traditional, measured pace. The fighting is much slower than what you'd see in Marvel, though certain features like tag-team and X-Ray Moves do speed things up a little. Unlike Marvel, high-speed combos aren't really the be-all-end-all lifeblood of this game. It's more about placement and precision, making the right move at the right moment.

So yeah, I know this has been kind of rambling, but I hope you find it useful.

Mortal Kombat is terribly boring after you see the same special attack every 20 seconds. Check out some youtube vids of the other two.

one for MvC3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8ozCG3e8dQ

aaaand one for blazblue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffboeNnT_VQ&feature=related

blazblue is slower. much slower. Looks easier to me.

but personally, my vote is for MvC3. seems much more tactical and dynamic, what with being able to switch between 3 character for different strategies.

I also think that waiting for a game that hasnt been announced yet seems kinda meh.

*edit*

adding a mortal kombat vid for fairness.

not my cup of tea. slow paced and spammy, and gore gets old.

MK is more fleshed out. It has a story mode, various "challenge" modes, and you can tell that they were given time to work on things other than combat. MvC3 is about fighting. Nothing else.

Makes sense, considering what I've seen. I watched a bit of Blazeblue related videos and it's just not my cup of tea. I figure it's either MvC3, MK or continuing the wait for Red Faction: Armageddon.

Go with MK. Seriously. I never had a high hopes for this game, but positive reviews encouraged me to buy it, and... My god, I spent so many hours on this. Story is only so-so, but the way it's done is probably the best in fighters EVER (if a more competent plot like the one in BlazBlue would be presented this way, I would be in Heaven). Many, many things to do, even in single player, enjoyable 'easy to learn, hard to master' fighting. IMO, the new MK is right there with The Witcher 2 and L.A. Noire in '2011 must buy games' category.

The only thing I can complain about is slow servers for online play (hopefully it will be fixed in the future), and Shao Kahn, who is the cheapest bastard in fighting games since Soul Calibur 3's Night Terror on hard in challenge modes.

As someone who own(s)/(owned) both it comes down to this. If you like to be really technically brilliant and have to know everyone move in the book to win a game go for Marvel vs Capcom 3 (MvC3 for short). But if you want a more relaxed arcade-like fighting game that's accessible to those of us who are not gifted with encyclopaedic knowledge of the moves list go for MK.

I couldn't stand MvC3, I found it was impossible to gauge what the enemy would do and this whole tag-team stuff could have you destroyed without you even knowing what happened. If it's one thing I can say about MvC3, when you eventually do get into a game (the online waiting is rivalling that of Gears 2 match-making) the online connection is a lot better than MK. MK servers are crap, I was playing against a friend of mine who lives 3 miles away and it was like at least 3/4 of a second lag; that's really bad for a fighting game.

Simply put if you want something more difficult go for MvC3 or if you want something more accessible albeit more stupid, go for MK.

P.S. Some might say I've put a bit too much detail into this, but I think it's going to answer your question a lot better.
