Firstly, because the colour is prettier.

Secondly, because the red and blue thing originated from strategy simulations used by the US military during the Cold War. Blue was used to represent US (or NATO) forces, while red was used to represent Russian (or Eastern Bloc) forces. And since Russians are so much cooler then Americans, I'd rather be on the red team.
